CHAPTER 2 — The Bride Everyone Wanted to Destroy

The engagement announcement exploded across America before sunrise.

CEO Nathan Carter to Marry Housekeeper.

Financial news covered it.

Entertainment shows mocked it.

Social media exploded.

Some called it the greatest love story of the decade.

Others called Nathan the richest fool in Connecticut.

Margaret Carter called it a disgrace.

Three days later, Nathan walked into the mansion library expecting to discuss wedding preparations.

Instead...

His mother had transformed the room into a courtroom.

Three private investigators stood beside stacks of folders.

"So," Margaret said coldly.

"Let's educate my son."

She threw the first folder across the table.

Pictures spilled everywhere.

Emily mailing money.

Emily visiting a small rural town.

Emily hugging three children.

Emily buying school supplies.

Margaret crossed her arms.

"Explain these."

Nathan calmly answered,

"She already told me she supports three children."

Margaret slammed another folder down.

"And these?"

Birth certificates.

Three different surnames.

Three different fathers listed as "Unknown."

Margaret smiled triumphantly.

"Still proud?"

Nathan quietly studied every document.

Then looked up.

"Yes."

Margaret stared.

"What?"

"I said yes."

His calmness infuriated her.

"You don't even know who those fathers are!"

"I don't need to."

"You'll become a laughingstock!"

"I'd rather be laughed at than abandon someone kind."

Margaret's face turned crimson.

"You choose HER over your own mother?"

Nathan didn't hesitate.

"I choose the woman who stayed beside my hospital bed."

Silence.

Margaret realized...

She had already lost.

Humiliated, Margaret changed tactics.

"If I can't stop the wedding..."

"...I'll destroy the bride."

The bridal shower became a battlefield.

Margaret invited dozens of wealthy women.

None welcomed Emily.

One guest laughed loudly enough for everyone to hear.

"So..."

"Which baby's father couldn't attend today?"

The room erupted with cruel laughter.

Emily quietly lowered her head.

She said nothing.

Another woman smirked.

"Maybe we should serve formula instead of champagne."

More laughter.

Nathan was across town at an investor meeting.

Emily faced every insult alone.

Then Margaret stood.

Holding a crystal glass.

"Since Emily is becoming part of this family..."

"...perhaps she should tell us which child belongs to which man."

Silence.

Every camera pointed toward Emily.

She slowly stood.

Her hands trembled.

Everyone expected excuses.

Instead...

Emily smiled sadly.

"I hope none of you ever have to make the choices I made."

She bowed politely.

Then walked out.

Not another word.

Even the servants watching from the hallway wiped away tears.

Because somehow...

The quiet woman carried more dignity than everyone inside the ballroom combined.

That evening Nathan found Emily sitting alone in the mansion greenhouse.

She was crying for the first time since he'd met her.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

"They'll never accept me."

Nathan knelt before her.

"I didn't fall in love with my family's approval."

"I fell in love with your heart."

Emily looked away.

"If one day you learn everything..."

"...you might hate me too."

Nathan gently lifted her chin.

"There is nothing about your past that could erase what I've seen with my own eyes."

Emily almost confessed.

Almost.

But fear stopped her.

Not fear of losing herself.

Fear of losing him.

The wedding arrived beneath bright summer skies.

Reporters crowded outside the historic church.

Guests whispered as Emily appeared in a modest white gown.

No diamonds.

No extravagant jewelry.

Only a tiny silver cross around her neck.

Margaret noticed it immediately.

"What an ugly necklace," she muttered.

Emily instinctively covered it with her bouquet.

As though protecting something precious.

Nathan smiled the moment he saw her.

To him...

She looked more beautiful than every socialite he'd ever met.

When the minister asked,

"Do you, Nathan Carter, take Emily Carter to be your lawful wife?"

He answered without hesitation.

"I do."

Emily's voice shook.

"I... I do."

The church applauded.

Margaret didn't.

She simply whispered to herself,

"You'll regret this marriage before tomorrow morning."

Late that night...

The newlyweds finally entered the master bedroom.

Outside, rain tapped gently against the windows.

Candles flickered softly.

Nathan approached his wife with nothing but tenderness.

"You don't have to be afraid anymore."

Emily couldn't stop shaking.

"There are things you still don't know."

"We have forever."

"What if forever changes tonight?"

Nathan smiled.

"Nothing could make me stop loving you."

Emily closed her eyes.

Very slowly...

She untied the ribbon around her nightgown.

Her fingers trembled.

The fabric slipped from her shoulders.

Nathan expected stretch marks.

Perhaps scars from difficult pregnancies.

Instead...

The moment her back was fully exposed...

His smile vanished.

Because covering nearly every inch of Emily's back...

Were dozens of deep, pale scars.

Not scars from childbirth.

Not accidents.

They looked like old whip marks.

Like someone had tortured her for years.

Nathan stepped backward in horror.

"My God..."

"Emily..."

"...who did this to you?"

A single tear rolled down Emily's face.

Then she whispered the words that would shatter everything Nathan believed about her.

"I never gave birth to those children."

"They're my little brothers and sister."

"And these scars..."

May you like

"...are the price I paid to keep them alive."
