The custody hearing attracted national attention.
Outside the courthouse...
Hundreds of reporters waited.
Victor Kane arrived surrounded by expensive lawyers.
Nathan arrived holding Johnny's hand.

Victor's attorney stood first.
"Your Honor..."
"My client can provide private schools, luxury homes, and financial security."
He pointed toward Emily.
"This woman has no biological relationship to the child."
Murmurs spread across the courtroom.
Then Nathan's attorney stood.
"We would like to call Jonathan Carter."
Johnny nervously walked to the witness stand.
The judge smiled kindly.
"Do you understand why you're here today?"
Johnny nodded.
"Yes."
"Who do you want to live with?"
The courtroom became completely silent.
Johnny looked first at Victor.
Then at Emily.

At Nathan.
He took a deep breath.
"When I was six..."
"I had pneumonia."
"My sister sold the only necklace our mother left her..."
"...to buy my medicine."
Emily lowered her head, crying.
Johnny continued.
"When I was eight..."
"She skipped meals so Paul and I could eat."
"When I was ten..."
"She worked three jobs."
"I never saw her buy new shoes."
He looked directly at the judge.
"I don't care whose blood I have."
"The only family I've ever known..."
"...is sitting right there."
He pointed toward Emily and Nathan.
"They didn't inherit me."
"They chose me."
There wasn't a dry eye in the courtroom.
Even the court reporter quietly wiped away tears.
The judge adjusted his glasses.
Then looked toward Victor Kane.
"Mr. Kane..."
"In twenty-eight years on this bench..."
"I've rarely seen a clearer expression of a child's best interests."
He smiled at Johnny.
"Young man..."
"You may go home with your family."
The courtroom erupted in applause.
Victor Kane silently lowered his head.
For the first time in his life...
Money had lost.
Love had won.
Outside the courthouse...
Reporters surrounded Emily.
One shouted,
"Do you regret sacrificing your youth for children who weren't yours?"
Emily smiled through tears.
"No."
"If I had to live my life again..."
"I would choose them..."
"...every single time."
Nathan reached for her hand.
Flashbulbs exploded around them.
