CHAPTER 4 — The Monster From West Virginia

The Carter family's lawyers arrived in West Virginia before sunrise.
Nathan wasn't interested in revenge.
He wanted the truth.
Every truth.
Every lie.
Every scar.
David Ross, Carter International's head of security, stood outside an abandoned logging camp with a team of investigators.
The place smelled of damp wood and rust.
Broken machinery lay scattered like forgotten skeletons.
An elderly sheriff walked toward David.
"You folks looking for Jacob Harlan?"
David nodded.
"We have reason to believe he abused a young woman named Emily Carter."
The sheriff's face immediately changed.
"You mean little Emily..."
He sighed deeply.
"I've waited fifteen years for someone powerful enough to stop that devil."
Boxes of old records were pulled from storage.
Payroll books.
Medical reports.
Witness statements.
One investigator suddenly froze.
"Sir..."
"You need to see this."
Inside an old ledger were handwritten notes.
Emily Carter — Age 16
Daily wage: $18
Penalty for slowing production: Five lashes.
Penalty for requesting leave: Ten lashes.
Nathan stared silently at the photographs David had emailed him.
His hands shook.
There it was.
Proof.
Her scars had been recorded like accounting entries.
As though human suffering were nothing more than business expenses.
Nathan quietly whispered,
"My God..."
The investigators kept searching.
Inside a locked cabinet they discovered something even worse.
A faded notebook.
On the first page, written in neat teenage handwriting, were the words:
"For Johnny. For Paul. For Lily."
Nathan opened it carefully.
It wasn't a diary.
It was a budget.
Every dollar Emily earned had been recorded.
Bread.
Milk.
School shoes.
Medicine.
Winter coats.
Every page ended with the same sentence.
"No matter what happens today, don't let them know I cried."
Nathan couldn't continue reading.
His vision blurred.
Meanwhile...
Jacob Harlan had no idea his past was catching him.
The sixty-two-year-old man sat inside a roadside bar bragging to drinking buddies.
"That little girl?"
"I made her tough."
"They should thank me."
The bar door suddenly opened.
David Ross walked inside.
Behind him stood two state detectives.
And four U.S. Marshals.
Jacob laughed.
"What is this?"
David calmly placed Emily's notebook on the table.
"You remember her now?"
Jacob's smile disappeared.
By sunset...
Jacob Harlan was in handcuffs.
Television helicopters circled above the courthouse.
Former workers lined up voluntarily to testify.
One old logger cried before reporters.
"We wanted to help Emily."
"But Jacob threatened to burn our homes."
Another woman held back tears.
"She protected those little children."
"She took every beating herself."
America watched in disbelief.
The woman everyone had called immoral...
Had actually been a hero.
Back in Greenwich...
Emily knew nothing.
She was helping Lily practice multiplication while Johnny fixed Nathan's old bicycle in the garden.
For the first time in years...
The children laughed without fear.
Nathan watched quietly from the terrace.
He finally understood why Emily smiled through pain.
She had spent her entire adult life pretending everything was okay...
So three innocent children could believe tomorrow would be better.
But tomorrow...
Would bring another storm.
May you like
Because Margaret Carter was about to discover a secret buried inside her own family's history.
