Chapter 10 - THE FINAL SLICE OF BREADOn a crisp autumn afternoon, exactly six months to the day since my life changed forever, I took Camila to a quiet, sunlit park near our new home.

She ran ahead across the green grass, chasing a flock of friendly pigeons, her laughter ringing out like music in the afternoon breeze.

I sat on a wooden park bench, watching her with a deep, unbreakable sense of peace.

As I opened my tote bag to pull out a water bottle, my fingers brushed against something dry and hard at the very bottom.

Curious, I pulled it out.

It was an old, wrapped piece of artisanal bread—a remnant from a bakery trip weeks ago, completely forgotten. It was dry, stale, and hard as stone.

I looked down at the crust, and a quiet, triumphant smile spread across my face.

I didn't throw it away in disgust. Instead, I broke off a small piece, crumbled it gently onto the grass, and watched as a flock of eager birds fluttered down to feast on it, sharing it freely and joyfully in the warm sunlight.

My phone chimed softly in my pocket. A text message from Mateo Silva:

"Case officially closed, Mariana. All files sealed. You won."

I locked my phone, slid it back into my pocket, and stood up as Camila came running back, throwing her little arms around my waist.

"Mommy, can we get ice cream?" she asked, looking up with big, bright, sparkling eyes.

"Whatever you want, my love," I said, taking her small hand in mine. "Whatever you want."

We walked away together down the sunlit path, leaving the past far behind us—where it belonged.
