Chapter 8 - THE COURTROOM SHOWDOWNThe family court courtroom in downtown Monterrey was cold, sterile, and filled with the quiet hum of fluorescent lights.

It was the morning of the final custody and divorce hearing.
Daniel walked in looking hollowed out. His tailored suits were gone, replaced by an ill-fitting thrift-store jacket. His hair was unwashed, and dark circles bruised the skin beneath his eyes. Carmen wasn't even allowed in the courtroom due to her previous public outbursts and lack of legal standing in the custody proceedings.
Judge Morales sat behind the high mahogany bench, his expression stern as he reviewed the thick stack of documents compiled by Mateo Silva and the court-appointed child psychologist.
I sat on the plaintiff's side, wearing a sharp, crisp navy blue pantsuit. Camila was with my mother in a secure, quiet playroom upstairs, safe and happy.
"Mr. Fuentes," Judge Morales spoke, his deep voice echoing through the silent room. "I have reviewed the psychological evaluations, the financial forensic reports, and the verified incident logs regarding your household environment."
Daniel swallowed hard, standing up nervously at the defense table. "Your Honor... my wife... Mariana is trying to destroy me. She cut off our family, she threw us out on the street, and she’s alienating me from my daughter. I made mistakes, yes, but I am a good father!"
Judge Morales raised a hand, cutting him off mid-sentence.
"Mr. Fuentes, a good father does not permit his family to neglect a three-year-old child, isolating her on a freezing balcony with a stale piece of bread while adults gorge themselves on luxury food bought with his wife's exclusive labor. Furthermore, the financial fraud documented in Exhibit C reveals systematic theft of over one million pesos through unauthorized loans and diverted corporate assets."
Daniel opened his mouth, but no words came out.
"The court finds overwhelming evidence of parental neglect, emotional abuse, financial malfeasance, and total abandonment of marital responsibilities on your part," Judge Morales declared, picking up his heavy black fountain pen.
"Accordingly, the court orders the following:"
Sole Legal and Physical Custody of the minor child Camila Fuentes is hereby awarded permanently to Mariana Fuentes.
Supervised Visitation Rights for Daniel Fuentes, conditional upon completion of court-mandated parenting classes, anger management, and psychological counseling at his own expense.
Immediate Dissolution of Marriage on grounds of financial fraud, abandonment, and breach of matrimonial fiduciary duty.
Full Restitution Judgment requiring Daniel Fuentes and Carmen Fuentes jointly to repay 1,250,000 pesos to the plaintiff, backed by immediate garnishment of any future wages or seizure of remaining personal assets.
Bang.
The judge’s gavel struck the sound block.

It was over.
Daniel slumped back into his chair, burying his face in his hands as silent, bitter tears finally fell. He had traded his family, his wife, and his daughter for a plate of lobster and his mother's toxic approval. Now, he had nothing left at all.
