Chapter 4 - THE SOCIAL MEDIA MELTDOWNWithin twenty-four hours, Valeria’s superficial world imploded.

Valeria was a minor-league social media "influencer" who built her entire online persona around luxury, high-end fashion hauls, upscale dining, and designer handbags—all funded by my hard-earned salary. Her followers believed she was a wealthy heiress living the high life in Monterrey.
The reality was about to crash down on her digital empire.
On Wednesday morning, while packing their meager belongings into cheap plastic suitcases under the watchful eye of building security, Valeria attempted to film a tearful TikTok video to garner sympathy and rally her followers against her "evil, tyrannical sister-in-law."
"Guys, I am literally shaking right now," Valeria sobbed into her front-facing camera, dabbing at dry eyes. "My toxic, narcissistic sister-in-law has illegally thrown my elderly mother, my brother, and me out onto the streets because of a tiny family disagreement. She thinks money makes her God. Please, I need my followers to report her accounts, call out her business, and show her what real community power looks like!"
She hit publish.
Within two hours, the video went viral—but not in the way she expected.
Internet sleuths, corporate colleagues from my firm, and sharp-eyed investigative local bloggers immediately dissected the background of her video. In the shot, cheap plastic packing crates sat next to empty designer dust bags that contained no actual designer items. Worse, a sharp-eyed local financial journalist recognized the high-rise molding and posted a thread exposing the truth.
Thread:
"Let's talk about Valeria Fuentes and the 'tyrannical sister-in-law.' Public property records show the luxury apartment lease is exclusively held by Mariana Fuentes, a senior corporate director at one of Monterrey's top tech logistics firms. Records also show zero income generation by Daniel Fuentes or Carmen Fuentes for over four years. Translation: The influencer was living entirely off a single working mother's salary while treating her toddler like an outcast."
The internet turned on Valeria like a pack of starving wolves.
Comments flooded her page by the tens of thousands:
“Imagine living off your brother’s wife’s salary and calling her toxic for cutting you off!”
“Where’s the designer bag in that dust bag, Bestie? Pawned it for rent?”

“Team Mariana! Give us the GoFundMe so we can support the working mom!”
By Wednesday evening, Valeria’s brand sponsorships dropped her one by one. Her follower count plummeted by forty thousand in six hours. She deleted her TikTok account in absolute disgrace, her digital castle reduced to digital ash.
