Chapter 2 - MORNING AT THE GATES OF HELLAt 8:30 AM the next morning, my phone lit up.

It was Daniel. I ignored it.
Then Carmen. Ignored.
Then Valeria. Ignored.
I sat in my downtown office overlooking the sleek Monterrey skyline, drinking black coffee while Mateo Silva reviewed the bank statements I had printed out. He raised his eyebrows, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses.
"Mariana, looking at these figures, you've transferred well over 1.2 million pesos to your in-laws over the past three years alone. Under Mexican civil law regarding property regimes—especially given that you acquired these assets through your individual professional labor prior to and during marriage under a strict separation of estates—recovering misappropriated funds given to third-party relatives without your explicit mutual consent is entirely viable."
"I want every cent back, Mateo," I said calmly. "And I want full, unshared custody of Camila. Daniel hasn't worked a legitimate job in four years. His mother and sister are financially dependent on my goodwill, which has officially expired."
Just as Mateo finished speaking, my phone buzzed again. This time, it was a WhatsApp video call from Daniel.
I tapped the speaker button and placed the phone flat on the conference table so Mateo could hear.
"Mariana! Are you out of your absolute mind?!" Daniel’s voice shrieked through the speaker, frantic and high-pitched. In the background, I could hear Carmen wailing loudly in theatrical distress.
"Lower your voice, Daniel," I said evenly.
"My card was declined at the supermarket! Carmen tried to buy groceries for breakfast, and the cashier treated us like common thieves! The whole cart—wagyu beef, organic berries, imported coffee—left at the register! Do you know how humiliating that was? Valeria is crying because her boutique delivery was cancelled! Fix this right now!"
"There is nothing to fix," I replied, my voice devoid of emotion. "You wanted discipline, Daniel. You said children need to learn they can’t always have everything they want. I figured adults could use a lesson in that too."
"Mariana, stop playing games!" Carmen grabbed the phone, her voice dripping with venom. "How dare you cut off your elders?! Who do you think pays the rent in this city? Who do you think birthed the man who gave you a child? You ungrateful, cold-hearted corporate bitch! Unfreeze our accounts this instant, or you will never see your daughter again!"
Click.
I hung up.

Mateo looked at me, his expression grim. "Did she just threaten to withhold your child?"
"Yes," I said, grabbing my briefcase. "And that just cost them any chance of a quiet settlement."
