Chapter 1 - The Ghost in the Family TreeThe cold February wind felt like broken glass against my skin as I stood frozen on the frost-bitten lawn. The silver charm sat in Emma's tiny, steady palm—glinting under the pale winter sun like a drop of fresh blood.

"Dad?"
Isabella’s voice trembled. She was staring at me, her chest heaving, her small hands gripping the arms of her wheelchair as if she were trying to anchor herself to reality. For three years, those legs had been lead weights. Now, color was rushing back into her cheeks, and her toes were flexing against the cold air.
"Isabella," I choked out, dropping to my knees. I didn't care about the guards watching from the perimeter wall. I didn't care about the empire I had built on blood, fear, and absolute control. My world had just tilted on its axis.
I looked from my daughter's disbelieving eyes back to the toddler holding the silver locket.
"Where is your grandmother, Emma?" I asked, my voice dangerously low, stripped of all warmth.
Before the little girl could answer, the heavy oak back door burst open. Sophia Rossi, our head housekeeper of ten years, rushed out across the frozen grass, her apron flying behind her, terror carved deep into her pale face. She took one look at the open locket in Emma's hand and collapsed to her knees in the dirt.

"Mr. Moretti," Sophia sobbed, pressing her forehead against the icy ground. "Forgive me. I swore to your wife I would never let you find out until the child was old enough to walk."
"Get up, Sophia," I commanded. The words tore out of my throat. "Start talking before I burn this entire estate to the ground."
