Twenty family members sat frozen in their holiday best, their eyes darting between Evelyn’s triumphant smirk and Daniel’s averted gaze.
Daniel took a sip of his wine, his Adam’s apple bobbing nervously. “Don’t make such a big deal out of it,” he muttered again, louder this time, as if trying to convince himself more than the room. “Mom is stressed. Just go upstairs, clean up, and let’s pretend this didn’t happen.”
I didn’t cry. The tears that usually came so easily when dealing with Evelyn’s endless cruelty had completely dried up. Instead, a cold, crystalline clarity settled over my mind. I slowly pulled my platinum diamond wedding ring—the one Daniel had bought with his mother’s borrowed money—off my finger. I placed it gently beside the spilled soup on the floor, right in front of Daniel’s polished shoes.
“It’s not a big deal,” I whispered, my voice cutting through the holiday chatter like a scalpel. “You’re right, Daniel. It’s not. Because it’s the last time any of you will ever humiliate me.”
Before Evelyn could open her mouth to deliver another barbed insult, the front door swung open. A blast of winter wind swept through the foyer, followed by the heavy, rhythmic thud of expensive leather shoes.
