Chapter 1 - THE REVELATION ON THE HARDWOODThe rubber prosthetic belly lay on the polished marble floor like a grotesque, deflated organism, the fake skin pale and sickeningly realistic under the crystal chandelier.

Vanessa shrieked, lunging forward with a speed that entirely contradicted her supposed eight-month-pregnant condition. She scrambled across the floor, her manicured fingers clawing desperately at the silicone lump to hide it, but the damage was already done.
Silence descended upon the grand foyer—a heavy, suffocating stillness broken only by the ticking of the antique grandfather clock in the corner.
Ryan stood frozen, his hand still gripping the handle of my Louis Vuitton suitcase. His eyes darted from the deflated silicone lying on the floor back to Vanessa, who was now hyperventilating, her face flushed with a mixture of terror and unadulterated rage.
"Ryan... baby, let me explain," Vanessa stammered, her voice losing its previous honeyed sweetness, turning into a frantic, high-pitched screech. "It’s not what it looks like! The doctor said—the doctor said I had to wear a compression binder for medical reasons, and the padding slipped—"
"Shut up, Vanessa," Ryan’s mother, Elena, hissed. Her satisfied smile had vanished, replaced by a pale, rigid mask of panic. She stepped in front of Vanessa, trying to block Ryan’s line of sight. "Ryan, darling, don't listen to this pathetic woman's setup. She probably sabotaged Vanessa's clothes! She’s always been jealous, vindictive—"
I stood by the doorway, my heart hammering against my ribs, but a cold, steady calm washed over the humiliation I had felt just moments before. I didn't say a word. I simply crossed my arms and raised an eyebrow.
Ryan dropped my suitcase handle. The heavy leather bag hit the floor with a dull thud. His jaw was clenched so tight a muscle ticked violently in his cheek. He looked at his mother—the woman whose word he had blindly trusted over mine for five years of marriage—and then down at the silicone belly.
"Pick it up, Vanessa," Ryan commanded. His voice was dangerously quiet, stripped of all warmth.
"Ryan—"
"I said, pick it up."
Trembling, Vanessa reached down and clutched the fake belly to her chest like a shield.
Ryan stepped closer, his shadow falling over both women. "If you're eight months pregnant with my child, where is the baby, Vanessa? Did it vanish into thin air? Or were you never pregnant at all?"
Elena grabbed Ryan’s arm, her voice shaking despite her attempts to sound authoritative. "Ryan, stop this madness right now! You are humiliating our family! Send this woman away—"
"No," Ryan interrupted, pulling his arm away from his mother with a sudden, harsh jerk. He turned his gaze back to Elena, narrowing his eyes. "You brought her here, Mother. You insisted she move into the master wing. You demanded I sign divorce papers today. Why?"
Elena’s face drained of every last trace of color.
"Tell me," Ryan demanded, stepping toward his mother. "Why did you want her gone so badly?"
Before Elena could speak, my phone buzzed violently in my pocket. I pulled it out. A notification flashed on the screen from an unknown, encrypted number:

“The fake pregnancy is just the distraction, Katherine. Check the safe in the study. The real secret involves who actually died twenty-five years ago.”
My breath caught in my throat. I looked up to see Ryan turning toward me, his eyes full of desperate confusion. The game was no longer about a broken marriage. A much darker war had just begun.
