Chapter 1 - The Weight of Iron

The cold link of the silver chain bit into Leandro’s palm, a heavy, unforgiving reminder of the hierarchy that bound the Vane family. Across the length of polished mahogany, Maribel’s eyes glittered with an unyielding, predatory triumph. She had staked her claim, seizing the seat of power not merely out of disrespect for Estelle, but to challenge her son directly.

“You hold the chain, Leandro,” Maribel whispered, her voice slicing through the tense stillness of the ballroom like a stiletto. “Will you pull it toward your mother, or will you let it anchor me to the throne?”

Daphne kept a steady, protective hand on Estelle’s shoulder. Estelle’s knees still throbbed from the sudden fall, her pride bruised far more than her flesh. She looked up at Leandro, her expression a mix of maternal warning and silent pleading. She knew Maribel’s game; every move was a calculated test designed to force Leandro to choose between his bloodline and his own burgeoning authority as head of the council.

Leandro did not flinch. His jaw tightened, the muscle ticking beneath his skin as the silence stretched to a breaking point. The Mafia councilmen seated around the periphery held their breath, their loyalty hanging in the balance of a single motion. Without breaking eye contact with Maribel, Leandro wrapped the silver chain tighter around his knuckles, cutting off the slack.

“A throne isn't defined by the chair, Mother,” Leandro said, his voice dangerously low, stripped of all warmth. “It’s defined by who commands the room.”

Before Maribel could react, Leandro gave the chain a sudden, violent yank. The force of it dragged Maribel forward, unbalancing her just enough to strip away her haughty composure. Gasps echoed through the ballroom as Leandro stepped past her, pulling the chain loose from her lap entirely, and handed it off to a nearby guard.

“Get her out of here,” Leandro commanded, turning his back on her.

Maribel righted herself, her face flushing with sudden, incandescent fury. She didn't scream; instead, a chilling smile crept onto her lips. “You think you’ve won the council tonight, boy? You’ve only just invited the wolf inside the gates.”
