Chapter 10 - The Final Gambit

The private jet soared above the endless, cloud-speckled expanse of the Atlantic Ocean, cutting through the stratosphere on a trajectory straight toward the South American coast.
Inside the cabin, the atmosphere was dense with anticipation. Leandro stood by the window, adjusting his cuffs while looking down at the rugged coastline below. Daphne checked the ammunition clips of her tactical sidearm with methodical precision, while Estelle sharpened a sleek stiletto blade against a whetstone.
“You know this could be a trap,” Estelle said without looking up from her blade. “Maribel loves a grand finale.”
“Of course it’s a trap,” Leandro replied calmly, turning away from the window. “The question is: who is springing it on whom?”
The jet’s landing gear lowered with a mechanical thud as they touched down on a private jungle airstrip hidden deep within the verdant canopy. The engines whined down to a stop, and the cabin door hissed open, admitting the humid, tropical air of the jungle.
They descended the metal stairs in formation, boots hitting the jungle soil with absolute authority. Waiting for them at the edge of the clearing was a single vintage Mercedes, its doors wide open. And leaning against the hood of the car, smoking a slim cigarette in the dappled sunlight, was Maribel.
She looked entirely unbothered, dressed in immaculate white linen, as if she were hosting a garden party rather than awaiting a syndicate war.
As Leandro approached, Maribel flicked her cigarette into the dirt and smiled.
“You actually came,” Maribel said, her voice dripping with amusement. “I knew you had the blood for it.”
Leandro stopped just a few paces away, his expression unreadable, his hand resting casually near his holster. Daphne and Estelle flanked him tightly, their weapons concealed but ready.
“You left us a map, Mother,” Leandro said quietly. “In our world, that’s either a declaration of war or a surrender.”
Maribel laughed softly, stepping away from the car and walking slowly toward her son until she stood just inches away. She reached out, her fingers gently brushing against the lapel of his jacket—the exact spot where the silver chain had once been fastened.
“It’s neither, my boy,” Maribel whispered, her eyes locking onto his with a fierce, burning intensity. “It’s the final lesson.”
Before Leandro could process her words, the jungle around them erupted into blinding light and a wall of armed mercenaries stepped out from the dense foliage, their weapons raised.
Leandro didn't flinch. Instead, a chilling, razor-sharp smile touched his lips. He pressed a small encrypted detonator hidden in his palm and clicked the button.
In the distance, a deafening series of synchronized explosions ripped through the jungle canopy—obliterating the hidden Moretti weapons cache and cutting off every single escape route Maribel’s mercenaries had prepared.

Maribel’s eyes widened in sudden, absolute shock as she realized the trap she had set had just been turned completely inside out.
“Checkmate, Mother,” Leandro whispered, as the shadows closed in around them all.
