Chapter 11 - The Empire of Ash

Flames danced wildly across the jungle clearing, casting a fierce, amber glare over the wreckage of the destroyed weapons cache. The concussive wave of the blast had knocked Maribel’s mercenaries off balance, scattering their formation into chaotic confusion.

Daphne and Estelle moved with ruthless synchronization. Before a single mercenary could recover their footing, Daphne swept the legs out from under the nearest guard, disarming him with a fluid twist of her wrist. Estelle followed up instantly, neutralizing the threat with a chillingly efficient strike to pressure points that left the operatives unconscious before they even hit the dirt.

Maribel stood frozen, her immaculate white linen suit stained with ash. The icy composure that had defined her reign of terror for decades cracked for the very first time. Her breath hitched as she looked past the smoke at her son, who stood completely unfazed amid the chaos.

“You anticipated this,” Maribel whispered, her voice laced with a mixture of disbelief and a dark, twisted thread of pride. “You knew I’d try to use the cache as leverage.”

Leandro stepped closer, the heat of the fire washing over his shoulders. He didn’t smile; his face was carved from absolute granite.

“You taught me well, Mother,” Leandro replied, his voice chillingly calm. “Rule number one of the Vane syndicate: never trust an adversary, especially one who shares your bloodline.”

Maribel’s jaw tightened, her eyes flashing with a final spark of defiance. She reached slowly toward her hip, her fingers grazing the handle of a concealed pearl-handled revolver. But before she could even clear the holster, a heavy metallic click echoed right beside her ear.

Daphne had materialized at her flank, pressing the cold barrel of her firearm directly against Maribel’s temple.

“Don’t even think about it,” Daphne warned, her tone flat and merciless.

Estelle walked up slowly, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with her son. She looked down at the woman who had tried to strip her of her dignity, her throne, and her life. There was no malice in Estelle’s eyes—only the profound, heavy weight of closure.

“Your game is over, Maribel,” Estelle said quietly. “The syndicate doesn’t belong to ghosts, and it doesn’t belong to traitors. It belongs to the living.”

Maribel slowly pulled her hand away from her weapon, her shoulders dropping in a rare gesture of defeat. She looked at Leandro, a bitter, ironic smile touching her lips. “You really have become a king, haven't you?”

“No,” Leandro said, turning his back on her as he gestured for the extraction team to move in. “I’m just cleaning up the past.”
