Chapter 1 - THE ACCUSATIONThe crystal chandelier in the foyer of the Sterling Manor cast a blinding, diamond-like glare across the marble floor, but the atmosphere was anything but luxurious. It was thick with tension, smelling faintly of expensive jasmine perfume and pure, unadulterated panic.

"Open your bag. Right now!" Eleanor Sterling’s voice cut through the silence like a jagged piece of glass. Her face was flushed, her manicured fingers trembling as she pointed an accusing finger directly at Maria.
Maria, the quiet, hardworking maid who had served the Sterling family for over five years, stood frozen by the grand staircase. Her hands gripped the straps of her worn canvas tote bag so tightly her knuckles turned white.
"Ma'am, I haven't taken anything," Maria whispered, her voice trembling. "You know I would never—"
"Save it!" Eleanor shrieked, stepping forward. "That necklace was a gift from my late husband on our tenth anniversary. It’s worth over two million dollars, insured by Lloyd's of London, and it was sitting right on my vanity when I went down for dinner. Now it’s gone, and the only person who entered that room today was you!"
Julian Sterling, Eleanor’s polished, silver-haired husband of ten years, stepped into the foyer from the study. He adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, his expression a mask of calculated disappointment. "Now, Eleanor, let's not jump to conclusions... though, Maria, it does look rather suspicious. Perhaps if you just empty the bag, we can clear this up quietly. We wouldn't want to involve the police."
The threat hung heavily in the air. Maria looked from Eleanor’s venomous glare to Julian’s cold, assessing eyes. She knew the game. She was just the poor help from the slums of the outer district; they were the untouchable elite.
"I didn't steal it," Maria said louder this time, her chin lifting just a fraction. "Call the police. Search the bag. Do whatever you want, because I have nothing to hide."

Before Eleanor could lunge forward to grab the bag herself, Julian held up a hand. "Wait. Before we do anything rash, let’s check the feed. The newly installed smart-surveillance system covers every square inch of this hallway and the master suite corridor. Every movement is recorded to the cloud."
Eleanor’s eyes lit up with malicious triumph. "Yes! The cameras! Let’s pull up the footage right now on the living room mega-screen. Let everyone see what kind of venomous snake we’ve been harboring under our roof!"
