Chapter 2 - THE GLITCH IN THE SYSTEMThe living room was silent except for the low, rhythmic hum of the high-end home automation server. Julian stood before the massive wall-mounted OLED screen, his fingers flying across his customized tablet with practiced ease.

Eleanor crossed her arms, tapping a stiletto heel against the Persian rug. "Hurry up, Julian! I want this thief out of my house and in handcuffs before midnight."
"Patience, darling," Julian murmured, his eyes reflecting the blue light of the display. "Accessing the cloud archive for the master suite corridor... loading timestamp: 7:15 PM."
Maria sat on the edge of a velvet armchair, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She knew she hadn't gone near the necklace. She had only entered the master bedroom to drop off the freshly pressed laundry, stayed for precisely forty-two seconds, and left. Why did she feel like a cold noose was tightening around her neck anyway?
The screen flickered. The high-definition footage materialized with startling clarity.
On the screen, the camera angle showed the luxurious hallway leading to the master suite. At exactly 7:14 PM, Maria appeared in frame, carrying her laundry basket. She walked steadily toward the double doors, entered the room, and emerged less than a minute later, empty-handed except for the basket.
Eleanor leaned in close, squinting at the screen. "There! Look at her right hand! She’s hiding something in her pocket!"
"Eleanor, pause it," Julian said quietly, his voice dropping an octave.
Julian tapped the screen, freezing the frame. He zoomed in on Maria’s coat pocket. A heavy, unmistakable silhouette of a multi-strand diamond necklace gleamed faintly under the fabric.
Maria gasped, leaping out of her chair. "That's... that's impossible! I didn't put anything in my pocket! I was wearing that coat, yes, but the pocket was empty—someone must have—"
"Silence!" Eleanor screamed, her voice cracking with fury. "You lying, ungrateful piece of trash! The camera doesn't lie! You had it! You stuffed it into your pocket right there on tape!"
Julian slowly turned away from the screen. He looked at Maria, his expression shifting from mild concern to deep, profound sorrow. "Maria... I trusted you. We both did. How could you do this to a family that treated you like one of our own?"
May you like
"I didn't!" Maria cried out, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "I swear on my mother’s grave, I didn't touch it! Look at the footage again! Look at the way the light hits the pocket—it looks superimposed! It’s edited!"
Julian let out a heavy sigh, shaking his head. "Maria, digital forensics is my business. That file is raw, uncompressed 4K footage straight from the hardware buffer. There is no editing. The math doesn't lie." He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out his phone. "I’m calling the police. Pack your things, Maria. Your time here is done."
