Chapter 10 - The Winter BranchOne year later, the snow fell thick and heavy over downtown Chicago, turning the skyline into a pale silver haze just as it had on that fateful winter morning.

Evelyn stood on the glass-enclosed balcony of her corner office on the top floor of Carter & Vance Architectural Firm—formerly Whitmore & Sterling. The plaque by the entrance had been completely replaced. Her name sat proudly at the top in sleek, modern brass lettering.

She wore a cashmere turtleneck and tailored grey trousers, her dark hair secured with a silver clip.

Her phone chimed on the mahogany desk behind her.

She walked over, picked it up, and glanced at the screen. It was a notification from her physician—a routine follow-up confirming her complete physical recovery, accompanied by a clean bill of health and a quiet, supportive note wishing her well on her journey toward the future.

She locked the phone and set it down.

Walking over to the window, she looked out at the glittering expanse of the city below. The streets were busy, filled with people rushing through the snow, wrapped in heavy coats, chasing their own lives, their own mistakes, their own redemptions.

A sharp tap sounded at her office door.

“Come in,” Evelyn said.

Marcus poked his head in, holding a stack of architectural blueprints. “The municipal bid for the new winter garden park just cleared city council, boss. We got it. 100% unanimous vote.”

Evelyn smiled—a genuine, warm, radiant smile that reached all the way to her eyes.

“Good,” Evelyn said, walking over to unroll the blueprints across her desk. “Let’s build something that lasts.”
