Chapter 12 - The Knock on the GlassTwo days later, the rain was pelting the glass facade of the Carter & Vance building with rhythmic intensity.

Evelyn was working late, reviewing structural safety calculations for a high-rise downtown project. The office was quiet, save for the hum of the HVAC system and the clicking of her keyboard.
Then, the private elevator chime echoed down the executive hallway.
Ding.
Evelyn frowned. The executive elevator required an encrypted biometric keycard that only she and Marcus possessed.
She stood up from her desk, walking toward the heavy oak-and-glass double doors of her office. As she peered through the frosted glass, a silhouette stood in the dimly lit hallway.
The door pushed open with a soft click.
Adrien Whitmore stepped into the office.
He looked a shadow of the man he once was. His tailored Italian suits were gone, replaced by an ill-fitting gray tracksuit and a mandatory ankle monitor strapped discreetly beneath his left trouser leg. His dark hair was streaked with premature gray, and his eyes—once calm and calculated—were now hollow, frantic, and desperate.
“Hello, Evie,” Adrien said, his voice raspy and choked.
Evelyn didn’t flinch. She didn’t run to the phone. She simply crossed her arms, leaning against the edge of her mahogany desk, her gaze as cold as winter ice.
“You’re trespassing, Adrien,” Evelyn said, her voice entirely devoid of emotion. “The security guards downstairs are going to escort you out in exactly two minutes. Or I can call federal probation and report a direct violation of your house arrest terms. Which would you prefer?”
Adrien took a step forward, holding up his hands in a defensive, pleading gesture. “Wait! Please, just give me two minutes. I didn't come here to fight you. I came to… to beg for your forgiveness.”
A cold, humorless laugh escaped Evelyn’s lips.
“Forgiveness?” Evelyn echoed, stepping away from the desk. “You think you can walk into my office after everything you destroyed, say a magic word, and walk out? You ruined my wedding, you tried to frame me for your corporate fraud, you stole millions from this firm, and you nearly destroyed my life. And you want forgiveness?”
“Vanessa lied to me!” Adrien blurted out, tears welling up in his bloodshot eyes as he took another desperate step toward her. “She manipulated me from the start! She threatened to expose my old college debts if I didn't help her siphon funds! I was trapped, Evie! I thought marrying you would save me, but I was a coward. I know that now. But I still loved you—deep down, I always loved you.”
Evelyn looked at him with absolute, clinical revulsion.
“Stop talking, Adrien,” she whispered, stepping right up to him until she was only inches away. “Because every time you open your mouth, you prove what I realized the moment I saw that red stain on my wedding dress: you don’t know what love is. You only know how to use people.”

She pointed a steady finger toward the elevator doors.
“Get out of my building. Because if you ever come near me, my firm, or my life again, I won't just send you back to prison—I’ll make sure you never see the light of day again.”
