Chapter 1 - The Dark Discovery in the ER

The darkness came slowly, then all at once. My cheek pressed against the icy concrete of the balcony, the freezing wind stinging what little exposed skin remained. Inside, I could see the blur of warm yellow lights, hear the faint, muffled thrum of Thanksgiving music, and smell the fading scent of roasted turkey. But out here, death felt inches away. My body shuddered violently one last time, a agonizing cramp tearing through my womb, before the world dissolved into pure silence.
When I woke up, the freezing cold was gone, replaced by the sharp, suffocating smell of antiseptic and the rhythmic, urgent beep-beep-beep of a heart monitor. Bright fluorescent lights pierced my eyelids.
"She's waking up!" a voice called out.
I blinked through blurry vision. Jacob was leaning over my hospital bed, his face pale, eyes bloodshot, holding my frozen hand between his warm ones. Behind him stood his mother, Evelyn, looking rattled, and his father, Arthur, pacing near the window with a storm brewing behind his eyes.
"Jacob..." I rasped, my throat raw from screaming into the freezing night air. "The baby... is the baby okay?"
Jacob choked back a sob, brushing hair from my sweaty forehead. "You're at Memorial Hospital, Sarah. You were out there for almost forty-five minutes. You hypothermic... your core temperature dropped dangerously low."
"The baby, Jacob! Is our baby alive?!" Tears welled in my eyes as panic seized my chest.
Before Jacob could answer, the door swung open, and Dr. Lawson, the head OB-GYN on call, stepped into the room holding a thick medical chart. Her expression wasn't just serious; it was grave.
"Mrs. Vance, I’m glad to see you conscious," Dr. Lawson said calmly, though her eyes flicked nervously toward the rest of the family. "We managed to stabilize your core temperature and arrest the premature labor contractions caused by extreme shock and hypothermia. Your child is alive."
I let out a massive sob of relief, clutching my belly. "Thank God..."
"However," Dr. Lawson interrupted firmly, holding up a hand, "we ran emergency blood panels and full body scans when you were admitted. And what we found... goes far beyond severe exposure to the cold."
The room fell dead silent. Even Arthur stopped pacing.
"What do you mean, Doctor?" Jacob asked, his voice shaking.
Dr. Lawson pulled up an MRI scan on the wall monitor. "Mrs. Vance was suffering from acute trauma caused by hypothermia, yes. But the blood work revealed elevated traces of a synthetic uterine stimulant—a dangerous, black-market drug used to induce forced labor—present in her system."
My heart stopped. "What? I haven't taken anything!"
"We know," Dr. Lawson replied cold-eyedly. "It was ingested orally, likely within two hours before you were locked on that balcony. The cold accelerated the drug's effect, causing violent, premature uterine contractions. If you had stayed out there five minutes longer, you would have suffered a complete placental abruption. You and the baby both would have bled out."
A collective gasp echoed in the room.
"Someone poisoned her?" Evelyn whispered, clutching her pearls in sheer terror.
"Not just poisoned, Mrs. Vance," Dr. Lawson said, looking straight at Jacob. "This was a calculated attempt to terminate her pregnancy and put her life in critical danger. We have already notified law enforcement. Detectives are on their way."
Just then, the hospital room door pushed open, and Brenda walked in holding two paper cups of coffee, looking completely unfazed. "Hey everyone, traffic was a nightmare coming back from the—"
She froze as every pair of eyes in the room locked onto her.
"Brenda," Jacob whispered, his voice cracking with a terrifying mixture of heartbreak and rage. "What did you put in Sarah's drink?"
Brenda’s mouth twitched, her cool facade faltering for a split second. "What are you talking about? I didn't put anything in her drink! She's making things up again for attention!"
May you like
"No one said it was in her drink, Brenda," Dr. Lawson remarked coldly, crossing her arms. "I only said it was ingested orally."
The color completely drained from Brenda's face.
