Chapter 6 - Hunted on the Highway

Glass shattered everywhere. Screams erupted inside the SUV as our driver struggled to maintain control, the vehicle swerving wildly across three lanes of traffic on the rain-slicked highway.
"Hold on!" Victoria screamed, pulling me down toward the floorboards.
I gripped my pregnant belly with both arms, shielding my child with my body as the SUV violently violently bounced off the guardrail, sparks flying outside the shattered windows.
Through the cracked side glass, I looked up and saw the driver of the grey pickup truck. It was Arthur. His face was twisted into a grimace of pure desperation. Beside him in the passenger seat sat Brenda, her eyes crazed, holding a heavy tire iron.
"They're trying to kill us!" Evelyn shrieked, hysterical on the floor. "Arthur, stop! That's your family!"
Arthur slammed his truck into our vehicle again, forcing our driver off the main highway and down a dark, secluded off-ramp leading toward an industrial warehouse district by the docks.
BOOM!
Our SUV’s back tire blew out from the impact. The driver slammed on the brakes, but the vehicle spun out of control, slamming rear-first into an abandoned brick warehouse. The airbags deployed with a blinding flash and deafening pop.
Smoke poured from the hood. My head hit the seat in front of me, leaving me dizzy, but I was conscious.
"Is everyone okay?!" Victoria groaned, blood trickling from a cut on her forehead.
"The baby... I think the baby is okay," I gasped, checking myself frantically.
Outside, the heavy thud of boots approached. Through the rain-streaked windshield, I saw Arthur and Brenda stepping out of the pickup truck. Arthur was holding a crowbar, while Brenda pulled a heavy hunting knife from her jacket.
"Get out of the car, Sarah!" Arthur roared, banging the crowbar against the SUV's hood. "Give me the journal and your phone! Do it now and nobody else gets hurt!"
"Arthur, please!" Evelyn screamed through the cracked window, tears blinding her. "Are you insane?! You're going to murder your wife and your pregnant daughter-in-law?!"
"You ruined everything, Evelyn!" Arthur screamed back, his voice completely unhinged. "If that child is born, I go to prison for the rest of my life! Everything I built, my reputation, my legacy—gone! Hand over the evidence!"
Brenda stepped forward, a sick, demonic smile on her face. "Leave the girl to me, Dad. I have a debt to settle for those handcuffs."
Brenda raised the heavy tire iron and smashed the driver's side window to reach for the door lock.

Suddenly, the roar of an engine screamed through the rain.
A high-speed black sedan tore down the off-ramp, drifted wildly across the asphalt, and slammed violently directly into Arthur’s pickup truck, pinning Arthur between the two vehicles with a sickening CRACK!
