Chapter 2 - The Web of Poison and Deceit

The silence in the room was deafening. Brenda stood paralyzed by the door, the hot coffee cups trembling in her hands until she dropped them onto the tile floor. Dark brown liquid splashed across her designer shoes.
"I... I meant whatever she ate or drank!" Brenda stammered, stepping back toward the door. "Jacob, you know me! You know I’d never hurt your baby! She’s trying to frame me! She locked herself out there to make me look bad!"
"You locked the door from the inside, Brenda!" I screamed, the raw emotion ripping out of my chest as tears streamed down my face. "I begged you through the glass! I hit the window until my knuckles bled! You looked me in the eyes and told me a little suffering would teach me not to be weak!"
Jacob turned to his sister, his fists clenched so hard his knuckles turned white. "Is this true? Did you lock her out there?"
"She's lying!" Brenda shrieked. "She's a manipulative bitch who wants to destroy this family!"
SLAP!
The sound crackled through the room like a thunderbolt. Arthur, Jacob's father, had stepped forward and delivered a stinging slap across Brenda's cheek. Brenda staggered back, holding her face in utter disbelief. Arthur had always been a quiet, patient man, but right now, his eyes were burning with pure fury.
"Shut your mouth, Brenda," Arthur growled, his voice trembling with disgust. "You’ve abused this poor girl since the day Jacob brought her home. But this? Trying to kill your own unborn niece or nephew? You are a monster."
"Dad!" Brenda cried, tears finally spilling down her cheeks. "You're taking her side?!"
Before another word could be spoken, two uniformed police officers stepped into the room, followed by a sharp-eyed investigator in a trench coat—Detective Miller.
"Brenda Vance?" Detective Miller asked, whipping out a pair of steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for attempted murder, aggravated assault, and reckless endangerment of an unborn child."
"Get your hands off me!" Brenda screamed, thrashing as the officer snapped the cuffs around her wrists. "Jacob! Tell them to stop! Mom! Help me!"
Evelyn turned her back on her daughter, covering her face in shame, while Jacob stood rooted to the spot, completely numb. As the officers dragged Brenda kicking and screaming down the hallway, the entire family was left in shattered ruins.
Detective Miller stayed behind, pulling out a notepad. "Mrs. Vance, we need to secure the scene at your apartment immediately. We need to test all the food and beverages served during Thanksgiving dinner."
"I... I cooked everything," I whispered, my brain spinning. "Except..."
"Except what?" Detective Miller pressed.
"Except the special herbal tea Brenda insisted on brewing for me before dinner," I said, a sudden realization striking me like lightning. "She said it was an expensive organic blend to help with my swollen feet. She personally poured it and handed it to me."
Jacob dropped to his knees beside my bed, burying his head in the blanket, sobbing hysterically. "I'm so sorry, Sarah... I told you she was just harsh... I thought she was just jealous... I almost let her kill you both..."
I looked down at my husband, but the comforting warmth I used to feel was gone. He had dismissed her abuse for years. His passivity had nearly cost me my life and our baby's life.
"Detective," I said, ignoring Jacob's weeping, "please check the dark cabinet in Brenda's old bedroom at my mother-in-law's house."

Jacob lifted his head, stunned. "Why would you say that?"
"Because three weeks ago," I said, staring directly into Jacob's eyes with a coldness he had never seen before, "I saw Brenda hiding a locked steel lockbox in that cabinet. And she told me if I ever looked inside, she’d make sure I regretted marrying into this family."
