Chapter 5 - The Shadow Behind the Curtain

I stared at the worn leather journal in Evelyn's shaking hands. "What is that?"

"This was my husband's... Arthur's private journal," Evelyn whispered, tears leaking from her sunken eyes. "I found it hidden in his office safe this morning while the police were auditing our family accounts. Sarah... you don't understand what kind of family you married into."

I motioned for the nurse to take us to my black SUV. I sat in the back seat, letting Evelyn sit across from me. Victoria, my lawyer, sat beside me, keeping a watchful eye.

"Explain," I demanded.

Evelyn opened the journal to a marked page dated six months ago. "Arthur’s real estate firm went bankrupt two years ago. He lost everything in bad offshore investments. But he kept it hidden from me, from Jacob, from everyone. To keep up appearances, he began embezzling money from the grandfather's trust fund."

My breath hitched. "Arthur did?"

"Yes," Evelyn said, her voice trembling. "When you got pregnant, Arthur panicked. He knew that the moment your baby was born, the court-ordered third-party audit of the trust fund would take place to allocate the 70% share to your child. The moment an auditor looked at those books, Arthur would go to prison for twenty years for grand larceny."

The pieces began connecting in my mind, forming a terrifying picture. "So Arthur... Arthur didn't slap Brenda out of anger at the hospital..."

"He slapped her to shut her up!" Evelyn sobbed, clutching her chest. "Brenda discovered Arthur's embezzlement three months ago. She blackmailed him! She threatened to expose him unless he helped her secure the trust money to pay off her own debts! Arthur was the one who bought the black-market stimulant, Sarah! Brenda was just the tool!"

A cold shiver ran straight down my spine. The quiet, respectable patriarch of the family—the man who had stood at the end of my hospital bed acting outraged—was the mastermind who wanted my baby dead.

"And Jacob?" I asked, my voice barely audible.

"Jacob knew nothing," Evelyn wept. "Arthur used Vance Logistics to launder the stolen trust money back into the family accounts, making it look like legitimate business revenue. Jacob was completely blind to it. He trusted his father implicitly!"

Just as the horror of Evelyn's revelation washed over me, my phone buzzed violently in my purse. It was an emergency alert from Detective Miller.

I answered on speaker. "Detective?"

"Sarah, where are you right now?!" Miller's voice crackled through the speaker, tight with urgency.

"I'm in my transport vehicle leaving the hospital. What's wrong?"

"Arthur Vance just posted Brenda's $2 million bail using a unverified offshore wire," Miller shouted over background commotion. "And three minutes ago, Brenda was released from custody! We just found out Arthur cut his court-ordered ankle monitor and grabbed a vehicle! They are together, Sarah, and they know Evelyn took the journal! Get to a safe location NOW!"

Before I could reply, a heavy dark grey pickup truck slammed into the side of our SUV with a deafening CRASH!
