Chapter 7 - Confrontation in the Dark

Arthur let out a blood-curdling scream as his legs were crushed between the bumpers. He dropped the crowbar and collapsed onto the wet pavement, writhing in agony.
The door of the black sedan flew open, and Jacob scrambled out into the pouring rain. His clothes were soaked, his face wild with panic and fury.
"Get away from my wife!" Jacob screamed, tackling Brenda to the ground just as she lunged toward our SUV with the knife.
Brenda shrieked, slashing wildly with the blade. "Get off me, Jacob! She destroyed our family! She took everything!"
"You did this to yourself!" Jacob yelled, slamming Brenda’s hand against the pavement until she dropped the knife. He pinned her arms behind her back, pressing his knee into her spine. "Dad stole the money, and you tried to murder my child! You're both sick!"
I forced my damaged SUV door open and staggered out into the rain, supported by Victoria. I held my belly, feeling small, frantic kicks inside—my baby was fighting, holding on through the sheer madness.
Arthur was groaning on the ground, blood pooling around his crushed legs. "Jacob... son... help me..." Arthur wheezed, stretching out a bloody hand. "We did it for the family... to keep the business alive..."
Jacob looked down at his father, his eyes dead and hollow. "You didn't do this for the family, Dad. You did it for your own pride. You almost killed my wife. You almost killed my child."
Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder by the second. Red and blue lights flashed through the heavy rainstorm as half a dozen police cruisers and ambulances swarmed the industrial park, boxing everyone in.
Detective Miller leapt out of the lead cruiser, gun drawn. "POLICE! DON'T MOVE! DROP TO THE GROUND!"
Brenda was immediately yanked up by officers and slammed against the hood of a cruiser, screaming obscenities as heavy steel cuffs were slapped onto her wrists for the final time. Paramedics rushed to stabilize Arthur, whose face was pale from extreme blood loss and crushed bones.
Jacob stood in the rain, soaked to the bone, watching his father be loaded onto a stretcher and his sister dragged into a police car. The illusion of his perfect family was completely, irrevocably shattered.
He turned slowly toward me, stepping closer, his chest heaving. "Sarah..."
I stood my ground, wrapped in a blanket provided by an arriving paramedic, staring at him with cold clarity.
"Is the baby okay?" Jacob asked, his voice cracking, terrified to touch me.
"The baby is strong," I said quietly. "Stronger than anyone in your family."
"Sarah, I’m so sorry," Jacob sobbed, dropping to his knees in the rain right in front of me. "I was blind. I was weak. I should have protected you from Brenda years ago. I should have seen what my father was doing. Please... give me a chance to fix this. Let me be a husband and a father."

I looked down at him. For months, I had wanted him to take my side, to stand up to his sister, to protect me. But seeing him kneeling in the mud didn't make me feel relieved. It made me feel nothing at all.
"You can be a father, Jacob," I said softly, my voice cutting through the noise of the rain and sirens. "When the baby is born, you will have visitation rights. But as for being my husband... we are finished."
