Chapter 3 - Secrets Beneath the Floorboards

The investigation moved with terrifying speed. Within twenty-four hours of Brenda's arrest, forensic teams raided both my apartment and Evelyn’s house. The story had already leaked to local news outlets: "Socialite Accused of Attempting to Freeze Pregnant Sister-in-Law to Death."

Jacob stayed by my side in the hospital, but an invisible wall had risen between us. Every time he tried to reach for my hand, I pulled away. He had enabled Brenda's toxic behavior for years, playing the mediator, telling me to "keep the peace." Well, the peace had almost put me and our child in a coffin.

On the third day, Detective Miller returned to my hospital room. His expression was darker than before.

"Mrs. Vance, Mr. Vance," Miller said, closing the door behind him. "We processed the apartment and searched the lockbox in the guest room as you requested."

Jacob sat up straight. "Did you find the drug?"

"We found more than just the synthetic stimulant," Detective Miller said, pulling out a plastic evidence bag containing a stack of financial documents and a small, encrypted flash drive. "We found proof of premeditation extending back over six months."

My heart hammered against my ribs. "What do you mean?"

"The toxicology report confirmed that the herbal tea contained heavy doses of Peganum harmala extract combined with a black-market uterine contractor," Miller explained. "Brenda bought it online using a burner credit card two months ago. But that's not all. We cracked the files on the flash drive."

He looked directly at Jacob. "Mr. Vance, do you know who the primary beneficiary of your late grandfather’s $12 million trust fund is?"

Jacob blinked, confused. "Of course. The trust states that upon Grandfather’s passing, the fortune is divided equally between Brenda and me, unless one of us has a biological heir first. If either of us produces a child, 70% of the entire trust immediately vests into a locked fund for that grandchild, leaving the remaining 30% to be split."

"Exactly," Detective Miller said coldly. "And five months ago, Brenda took out massive illegal loans with a high-interest offshore syndicate to fund her failed fashion line in New York. She owes over $4 million to people who do not use the legal system to collect debts. If your baby was born alive, her share of the trust dropped from $6 million to barely $1.8 million—nowhere near enough to cover her debts."

I gasped, clutching my stomach. "She didn't just hate me... she needed my baby dead so she could take the money!"

"It gets worse," Miller continued. "The flash drive contained forged medical documents attempting to prove that Sarah was suffering from severe psychiatric delusions and maternal depression. Brenda was planning to frame Sarah’s death—or the baby’s loss—as a suicide brought on by pregnancy psychosis."

Jacob covered his face, letting out a strangled, broken scream. "She... she was going to kill my family for money..."

"There's one more thing," Detective Miller added, eyeing Jacob suspiciously. "We found wire transfers going from Brenda’s secret offshore account into a joint account registered under the name of Vance Logistics... which is your company, Jacob."

I froze, turning my eyes slowly toward my husband. "Jacob... what is he talking about?"
