Chapter 4 - The Betrayal Within

The room was instantly bathed in a suffocating tension.

Jacob stared at the detective, his mouth agape, sweat instantly breaking out across his forehead. "What?! No! That’s impossible! Vance Logistics is my father’s old company! I run it, but Brenda has no access to our corporate accounts!"

"The paper trail says otherwise, Mr. Vance," Detective Miller said calmly, tapping the file. "Over $200,000 was transferred into your operational account three weeks ago. It was listed as a 'private consultation fee' from an anonymous LLC owned by Brenda. Right now, prosecutors are asking whether this was an attempted cover-up—or if Brenda had an accomplice inside the family."

"No! Sarah, look at me!" Jacob threw himself onto his knees beside my bed, grabbing the bed rails, his eyes wild with terror. "I swear on my life, I swear on our unborn baby's life, I didn't know anything about this! I didn't know she was in debt! I didn't take her money!"

"Then why is $200,000 in your business account, Jacob?!" I yelled, tears of utter betrayal burning my eyes. "Our business was struggling last month! You told me you found an angel investor! Was that Brenda?!"

"I... I thought it was an investor!" Jacob cried, hyperventilating. "A firm named Apex Capital reached out to invest! I didn't know it was a shell company owned by Brenda!"

"Or maybe," I said, my voice dropping into a deadly whisper as cold as the balcony concrete, "you knew your sister was evil, and you looked the other way because her money was saving your company."

"Sarah, no! Please!" Jacob begged, reaching for my hand.

"Get out," I said quietly.

"Sarah, please listen to me—"

"GET OUT!" I screamed at the top of my lungs, causing the heart monitor to blare aggressively.

Dr. Lawson and two nurses rushed into the room, instantly stepping between Jacob and me.

"Mr. Vance, you need to step outside right now," Dr. Lawson commanded sternly. "Her blood pressure is spiking! You are putting the mother and baby at extreme risk!"

Jacob was forced out of the room by the medical staff, staring back at me through the glass door with tear-filled, desperate eyes—the same glass door I had pounded on while freezing to death on his balcony.

Over the next forty-eight hours, I made a decision. I refused to let Jacob back into my room. I hired my own high-powered attorney, Victoria Sterling, and gave a full, detailed statement to Detective Miller.

On Friday morning, Dr. Lawson finally cleared me to be discharged, though under strict bed-rest orders. But I had no intention of going back to the apartment I shared with Jacob. Instead, I had my attorney secure a private, undisclosed safe house outside the city.

As I was being wheeled out the back entrance of the hospital to avoid the swarming media, my mother-in-law, Evelyn, stepped out from behind a pillar, looking haggard, hollow, and ten years older.

"Sarah," Evelyn sobbed, holding out her trembling hands. "Please... just give me two minutes. I beg of you."

I signaled to the transport nurse to stop. "What do you want, Evelyn? Have you come to defend Brenda too?"

"No!" Evelyn cried, dropping to her knees right there in the concrete loading bay. "Brenda is a monster! She deserves to rot in prison! But Jacob... Jacob is innocent, Sarah! He’s an idiot, he’s weak, but he didn't know! I know my son!"

"Your son let his sister abuse me for three years, Evelyn," I said coldly, staring down at her. "He stood by while she tore me apart. And when she locked me outside in sub-zero weather, he didn't even notice I was gone because he was too busy enjoying Thanksgiving."

"Sarah, please!" Evelyn reached into her coat and pulled out a thick, leather-bound journal. "You need to see this before you make any final decisions. Brenda didn't act alone. She had help... but it wasn't Jacob."
