Chapter 10 - THE FINAL TWIST: THE TRUTH ABOUT THE BOY IN THE VELVET BOOTH

The rain began to fall heavily, washing away the blood on the stone terrace.

Dante rushed forward, catching Leo in his arms, while Viktor stabilized me, applying a tight bandage to my bleeding shoulder.

Leo held onto my neck, sobbing against my gown. “Maya... Maya, don't go away! Please don't sleep!”

“I’m not going anywhere, my sweet boy,” I wept, kissing his wet cheeks. “I’m right here. I’m never leaving you again.”

Two hours later, after the authorities loyal to Dante had cleared the scene and Don Valenti’s compound down the mountain had been burned to the ground by Dante’s enforcers, silence settled over the master bedroom.

Leo was sound asleep in the center of the massive bed, clutching his plastic dinosaur, safe and untouched.

I sat on the edge of the bed, my shoulder bandaged, staring out at the rising dawn over the mountains. Dante stepped up behind me, wrapping a thick fleece blanket around my shoulders.

“Valenti is dead,” Dante said quietly. “His syndicate has surrendered. There is no one left to threaten you or Leo. You are safe. Forever.”

I looked up at his handsome, scarred face. “Thank you, Dante. For saving us.”

Dante looked down at me, a strange, enigmatic smile playing on his lips. He reached into his coat and pulled out a small, worn piece of paper—a yellowed receipt from six months ago.

He placed it in my hand.

I looked at the paper. It was an employment application for Lumina Dining Hall. Signed by the manager... six months prior.

My eyes widened as I read the handwritten notes on the back in Dante’s precise, elegant handwriting: “Applicant: Maya. Location: District 4. Status: Biological mother of Leo Vance. Position assigned: VIP Dining Server.”

I gasped, looking up at him in sheer shock. “You... you knew?”

“I found out six months ago,” Dante confessed softly, sitting beside me and taking my trembling hands. “When I was auditing my late wife’s private records, I found the forged adoption papers and your real name. I found out David had stolen your baby.”

“Why didn't you just tell me?” I whispered, tears filling my eyes. “Why did you let me work as a waitress with taped shoes? Why did you sit at that booth every week?”

“Because I didn't know who you were inside,” Dante revealed, his voice filled with overwhelming devotion. “I didn't know if you were a bitter woman who would demand money, or someone who would hurt Leo out of resentment for his life. So I brought you to Lumina. I sat at Table Four every Friday night for six months just to watch you. To see your heart.”

He leaned down, pressing his lips against my forehead.

“I watched you give your tips to homeless children outside the kitchen door. I watched you work until your feet bled without ever complaining. And then, the night the glass flew... you didn't know he was your son. You thought he was just a stranger’s child. And yet, you threw your own body into destruction to protect him.”

May you like

Dante squeezed my hand, locking his soul into mine.

“You weren't a waitress who got lucky, Maya. You were brought into my world by design—but you conquered it by love. You are the Queen of this family, and as long as I draw breath, this entire empire belongs to you and our son.”
