Chapter 11 - The Echoes of St. Mary’s

The scent of old paper, mothballs, and forgotten secrets filled the basement archives of St. Mary’s Hospital. Deep underground, away from the sterile white corridors and the high-tech pediatric wards, the historical records department sat like a silent tomb.
Elena pulled a heavy, dust-covered ledger from the metal shelf, her fingers tracing the handwritten entries from five years ago. Beside her, Arthur Vance held a tactical flashlight, its beam cutting through the thick, floating dust motes.
"Look at this entry, Arthur," Elena whispered, her voice echoing softly off the concrete walls. "Shift change at 3:00 AM. The night Mateo was taken. The attending nurse's signature isn't just forged—it’s completely missing from the digital backup upstairs."

"Because Dr. Harrison wiped the digital logs, but he forgot about the physical audit books kept by the night shift supervisors," Vance replied, leaning closer to examine the page. He pulled a specialized UV light from his pocket and clicked it on. A faint, fluorescent watermark glowed against the bottom corner of the ledger page. "Look at that imprint. It’s a notary seal from Sterling Holdings' legal department. They didn't just steal a child; they executed a corporate acquisition of a human being using hospital stationery."
Elena felt a cold shiver run down her spine, but her hands didn't shake. The fear that had paralyzed her five years ago was gone, replaced by an ice-cold resolve. Every page she turned was another brick pulled from the foundation of the Sterling dynasty.
