Chapter 18 - The Quiet EveningThe grand opening was a massive success, but by evening, the noise of the city faded into a peaceful, gentle stillness.

Elena and Mateo sat together on the front porch swing of their Craftsman home, rocking gently back and forth as the crickets chirped in the tall grass. The sky overhead was a deep, velvet canvas dusted with glowing stars—the very same stars painted onto the ceiling of Mateo's bedroom upstairs.
"Mom?" Mateo asked softly, resting his head against her shoulder.
"Yes, my love?"
"Do you think we'll ever have to look back again?"
Elena wrapped her arm around him, pulling him close, breathing in the sweet scent of his hair. She looked out toward the horizon, where the city lights twinkled like distant, harmless fireflies against the dark.
