Elena stood on the porch, holding a steaming mug of tea, watching as Mateo—now a tall, confident young man preparing for his first semester studying law at the university—packed his bags into the trunk of his car.
He slammed the trunk shut, walked over, and wrapped his arms around his mother in a tight, fierce hug.
"I'll call you every Sunday, Mom, I promise," Mateo said, smiling warmly.
"You better," Elena laughed softly, her eyes shining with unshed tears of pride. "And don't forget to pack the wooden sailboat. It belongs on your new desk."
Mateo reached into his bag, pulling out the smooth, pine-carved toy with its little blue sail, holding it up to the afternoon sun.
