Chapter 16 - Healing WoundsBack in the warm, sunlit kitchen of the Craftsman home, the smell of freshly baked cinnamon rolls filled the air.

Mateo sat at the kitchen island, carefully cutting colored construction paper into the shape of a sailboat while humming a cheerful tune. On his left wrist, the silver crescent moon birthmark caught the morning sunlight, looking like a quiet badge of honor rather than a scar of the past.
Elena stood by the sink, washing a coffee mug, watching him through the reflection of the window. A gentle knock sounded at the back door.
She opened it to find Arthur Vance standing on the porch, holding a large, neatly wrapped cardboard box tied with a bright red ribbon.
"Morning, Chief," Elena smiled, stepping aside to let him in. "What’s in the box?"
"Just some archived police property records that finally cleared legal review," Vance grinned, setting the heavy box down on the kitchen table. "Thought the young man might want a few things that actually belonged to his father before the hospital took everything."
Mateo looked up from his paper boat, his eyes lighting up with curiosity. "My... my real dad? The one who carved the wooden sailboat?"
"That’s right, buddy," Vance said gently, pulling the flaps open.
Inside sat a collection of old photo albums, a hand-carved wooden toolbox filled with sanding tools, and a silver pocket watch engraved with initials that matched Elena's late husband.
Mateo reached out, gently touching the cold metal of the pocket watch. A strange, serene look washed over his face—a deep generational connection that no corrupt billionaire, no forged adoption paper, and no stolen hospital record could ever erase.

"He... he had hands like mine," Mateo whispered, a soft, wondrous smile spreading across his face.
Elena felt a warm tear slip down her cheek, but this time, there was no pain attached to it—only pure, unadulterated grace.
