Chapter 4 - The House of Cards CollapsesThe news didn't just break the internet; it shattered an entire corporate empire.

By sunrise, the stock price of Sterling Holdings had plummeted by fourteen percent as institutional investors panicked over the unfolding scandal. News anchors across every major network dissected the security footage from the charity gala frame by frame: the spilled cranberry juice, the silver crescent moon birthmark, Victoria’s instantaneous mask of murderous panic, and her high-priced lawyers scrambling out of the precinct backdoor at 4:00 AM.
Inside the sterile, fluorescent-lit family reunification room of the department, the heavy oak door remained closed to the press.
Liam—no, Mateo—sat on the edge of a vinyl sofa. The designer jacket was gone, replaced by a soft cotton zip-up hoodie Elena had brought from home. In his small hands, he clutched the rough wooden sailboat his real father had carved half a decade ago.
Elena sat three feet away from him, her hands folded in her lap, terrified to move too fast, too loud, too aggressively. Every second felt like walking across a minefield of fragile glass.
"Does... does she know?" the boy asked softly, staring down at his sneakers. His voice was small, stripped of the polished, aristocratic elocution Victoria had forced him to drill into his vocabulary since he could talk.
"Victoria is being processed down the hall," Detective Vance said quietly from the doorway, leaning against the jamb with a steaming cup of black coffee. "Kidnapping a minor, falsifying international adoption documents, conspiracy, and obstruction of justice. Her lawyers are trying to negotiate house arrest, but with the entire world watching live feeds outside? Not a chance in hell. She’s going to trial."
Mateo looked up, his big, dark eyes—eyes that were an exact mirror of Elena’s—welling with hot tears. "She... she wasn't always mean. But she always told me if I ever misbehaved, or if I told anyone my real name, the police would put me in a cage because I didn't belong to the family."
Elena’s chest heaved. A sob broke free from her throat, and she finally crossed the small distance between them, dropping to her knees right in front of him—just as she had done on the ballroom floor hours ago.
"Oh, my sweet, brave boy," Elena whispered, her voice trembling as she reached out, hovering her palms just inches from his face, asking for permission. "Nobody is ever putting you in a cage again. You belong right here. With me. With your family."
Mateo looked at her face, searching the lines of exhaustion, the tear tracks on her cheeks, and the fierce, burning maternal light in her eyes. Slowly, tentatively, he leaned forward and buried his face into the crook of her neck.
His small arms wrapped tightly around her back.
Elena closed her eyes, pulling him against her chest with a force so intense it felt like she was fusing their ribs back together. The five-year nightmare was over. The ghost had flesh and blood again.
But as Detective Vance watched the reunion from the doorway, his phone buzzed violently in his coat pocket. He glanced down at the screen, and the small smile on his face instantly froze into a mask of grim, absolute dread.
He pulled the phone to his ear. "Vance."
A frantic voice crackled through the speaker—an active-duty detective currently securing the Sterling family mansion downtown.
"Chief, you need to get down here right now. We searched Victoria’s private wall safe behind her executive desk. We found the adoption files... and we found something else. Something that proves Victoria Sterling didn't steal that child on her own whim."
Vance’s eyes darted toward Elena and the boy, who were still holding each other in the center of the room.

"What are you talking about?" Vance demanded in a harsh whisper. "Who else is involved?"
"It wasn't just a random hospital snatch, Chief," the voice on the other end replied, breathless and panicked. "The paperwork lists a co-conspirator. Someone who signed off on the medical discharge papers five years ago using an active doctor's login. Someone who is still inside St. Mary's Hospital right now... holding a position of absolute power."
