Chapter 1 - The First Layer

The emergency room air smelled of bleach, warm copper, and the sickeningly sweet scent of Marissa’s designer perfume. Daniel took a step forward, his hand hovering over Evelyn’s wrist, ready to block her.

“Evelyn, stop this instant,” Daniel ordered, his voice echoing off the sterile tile walls. “You are crossing a line. Marissa is right—if you damage his arm, or cause a compound fracture because of some hysterical delusion—”

“Look at his eyes, Mr. Vale,” Evelyn interrupted, her voice unwavering. She didn't drop the heavy-duty medical shears. “Look at your son’s skin. Look at the fever sweat. A clean break does not produce localized necrotic heat after three days. Unless something is rotting inside.”

Marissa’s eyes flashed with a dangerous, instantaneous panic, though her lips curved back into a performance of maternal shock. “Daniel! She’s threatening your own son with a knife! Call security right now!”

Noah whimpered, his small fingers digging into the stiff mattress. “Dad, please. It’s biting.”

Daniel hesitated. The word biting dropped into the room like a lead weight. A broken bone aches, throbs, or burns—it does not bite. A terrifying memory flickered behind Daniel's eyes: his late wife, Clara, warning him on her deathbed that Marissa wasn't what she seemed. He had dismissed it as the paranoia of a dying woman.

“Do it,” Daniel said quietly, his gaze shifting from his wife to the nurse.

Marissa’s face drained of color. “Daniel, if you let this lunatic touch him, I am walking out of this hospital and I am never coming back.”

“Go ahead,” Daniel whispered, his voice turning cold as ice. “Evelyn, cut it open.”

The heavy shears bit into the rigid white fiberglass. Crr-ack. The sound was loud in the tense room. Noah screamed as the vibration rattled his fractured bone, but Evelyn worked with practiced, lightning-fast precision. She sliced down the side, peeling back the first dense layer of padding.

A foul, metallic odor rolled out of the gap—a smell of damp earth, stale sweat, and something chemical, like vinegar and copper.

Marissa took a step back, her hand flying to her nose, her carefully constructed composure finally cracking at the edges.

Evelyn’s face remained a mask of grim focus as she slid the blade deeper, prying open the second layer of cotton stockinette.
