Chapter 8 - The Price of Revenge

The morning sun broke over the city, casting a brilliant, warm gold light across the skyline and flooding through the wide glass windows of the private pediatric recovery room.
Noah sat propped up against a stack of fluffy white pillows. His left arm was wrapped in a clean, brand-new, plain white fiberglass cast—one that only contained a healing bone, completely free of secrets.
On the bedside table sat a large plate of chocolate chip pancakes and a tall glass of orange juice.
Daniel sat in the armchair beside the bed, pale and bandaged around the neck, but smiling with a lightness he hadn't felt in years. The heavy cloud of grief, lies, and paranoia that had hung over his life for two long years had finally been swept away by the harsh, cleansing light of truth.
The door pushed open softly. Evelyn and Marissa were currently spending their morning in very different accommodations—sitting in high-security federal holding cells awaiting trial for premeditated murder, conspiracy, and racketeering, facing multiple consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole.
Stepping into the room instead was a familiar face: a tall, quiet woman wearing a simple sweater, carrying a fresh sketchbook and a box of colored pencils.
Noah’s face lit up with a brilliant, genuine smile.
“Evelyn!” Noah shouted happily.
Daniel blinked in surprise, turning quickly in his chair. “Wait... Evelyn? I thought—the federal agent said—”
The woman smiled warmly, walking over to the bedside and setting the sketchbook down on Noah’s lap.
“Not that Evelyn, Mr. Vale,” she said with a soft, comforting laugh. “My name is Evelyn’s twin sister—Sarah. Your real babysitter. The agency sent me to start today, after the previous imposter was quietly intercepted and detained by federal authorities before she even reached your front porch two weeks ago.”

Daniel stared at her in utter astonishment, before letting out a long, deep, chest-shaking laugh that turned into happy tears. He reached across the bed, taking his son’s small hand in his.
The nightmare was finally over. The monsters in the dark had been unmasked, and for the first time in a very long time, the Vale family was truly safe.
