Chapter 7 - The Final Gambit

Daniel stared at the golden pen lying on the dark wood. His lungs burned, his limbs felt heavy as lead, and the edges of his vision were rapidly fading into a suffocating tunnel of blackness.
Marissa stood over him, her expression a mix of nervous impatience and sadistic glee. “Just sign it, Daniel. You can’t win against us. We’ve planned every single variable for two years.”
Daniel’s hand trembled as his fingers brushed against the cold metal of the pen. He looked up at Evelyn, who watched him with the detached curiosity of a scientist observing a dying insect under a microscope.
“You forgot one variable,” Daniel rasped, a faint, exhausted smile suddenly touching the corner of his bleeding lips.
Marissa frowned, glancing nervously around the dark room. “What are you talking about? There are no variables left. The police are ours, the house is ours, the boy is drugged—”
CLANG!
The heavy mahogany double doors of the study suddenly burst inward, splintering off their brass hinges with explosive force.
A blinding wall of white tactical floodlights filled the room, accompanied by the deafening roar of automatic weapons being unholstered.
“FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! NOBODY MOVE!”
Evelyn leaped out of the executive chair in sheer disbelief as half a dozen heavily armed FBI agents swarmed the room, pinning Marissa to the floor in a fraction of a second.
Stepping calmly through the blinding glare of the tactical lights was none other than Detective Vance—except his gold badge was replaced by an elite federal shield, and he wasn't looking at Marissa or Evelyn with complicity. He was looking at them with absolute, unyielding triumph.
Evelyn reached frantically for her handbag, trying to draw a concealed firearm, but a heavy combat boot slammed down onto her wrist, pinning her hand to the floor as a steel cuff clicked tightly around her right wrist.
“It’s over, Evelyn,” Vance said, his voice echoing off the study walls as he looked down at the paralyzed mastermind. “You’re good, but you’re not as good as you think.”
Marissa shrieked as zip-ties bound her wrists behind her back. “Vance! What are you doing?! We had a deal! You’re on our payroll!”

Vance chuckled, pulling a digital audio recorder out of his tactical vest and hitting stop. The tiny red indicator light blinked off.
“I’m an undercover federal agent who infiltrated your little circle six months ago when we flagged Clara Vale’s suspicious autopsy,” Vance said calmly, looking down at the stunned women. “Every conversation, every transaction, every confession you just made—including your lovely little family history, Evelyn—has been broadcasting live to a federal grand jury server down the street.”
