Chapter 10 - The Final Reckoning

The autumn wind whipped violently across the cliffs of the abandoned country estate two miles outside the city—the very same limestone caves where the forest centipedes had been harvested weeks ago.
Daniel Vale groaned, his vision swimming as consciousness slowly dragged him back to reality.
He was tied securely to an old wooden chair in the center of a damp, decaying stone cellar. Across from him, tied to a matching chair, was Noah. The boy was conscious, crying softly, his face pale with terror.
“Dad...” Noah whimpered. “Who is that?”
Daniel forced his eyes to focus, blinking away the sweat and blood. Standing near the dark, dripping stone archway of the cellar was a figure wrapped in a heavy black hooded cloak.
Slowly, the figure lowered the hood.
Daniel’s breath caught in his throat. It wasn't Elena. It wasn't Marissa.
It was Clara’s younger sister—the real Sarah, the quiet girl from the employment agency who was supposed to start work the morning after the FBI raid.
“Sarah?” Daniel choked out, disbelief tearing through his chest. “Why... why are you doing this? We thought you were just an innocent replacement!”
Sarah walked slowly toward them, her footsteps echoing off the wet stone walls. In her hands, she held a large glass terrarium filled with dark, writhing insects.
“Innocent?” Sarah laughed, a sound devoid of any warmth or human emotion. “Daniel, my sister Clara didn't just stumble into a bad marriage. She was my partner. We built the real estate empire together before you pushed her aside to build your corporate monopoly. When Marissa and Elena tried to steal the inheritance for themselves, I simply sat back and watched them play their little games—waiting for the precise moment to inherit everything legally.”
She knelt down beside Noah, gently brushing a lock of hair from the boy’s forehead with a chillingly affectionate gesture.
“And now, sweet Noah,” Sarah whispered, her eyes gleaming with manic satisfaction, “we are going to finish what my sister started. A tragic double drowning in the estate reservoir. A grieving father who lost his mind, and a boy who couldn't be saved.”
Before Sarah could lift the terrarium, the heavy iron cellar door at the top of the stone steps exploded inward with a deafening CRASH.
“FBI! DROP YOUR WEAPON!”
Marshal Marcus Vance charged down the stairs, his tactical rifle raised, followed by a swarm of federal agents flooding the damp cavern from every angle.
Sarah froze, the terrarium slipping from her hands and shattering against the stone floor, scattering the insects into the dark shadows. She spun around, her hand diving into her pocket for a hidden blade, but Marcus closed the distance in a fraction of a second, tackling her hard against the damp limestone wall as steel handcuffs snapped onto her wrists.
“It’s over, Sarah,” Marcus panted, pulling her up as federal agents swarmed around them to untie Daniel and Noah.
Minutes later, wrapped in warm rescue blankets, Daniel and Noah were led out of the dark underground cellar and into the blinding warmth of the morning sun.

An ambulance waited at the top of the ridge, its lights flashing brilliant red and blue against the autumn trees. Daniel pulled Noah tightly into his arms, burying his face in the boy’s hair as the terrifying nightmare finally dissolved into the bright, open air.
The monsters were gone for good. And the Vale family was finally, truly free.
