Chapter 4 - The House of Echoes

While Marissa sat trapped in holding, Daniel Vale stood in the center of his own grand, empty mansion. The house felt entirely different tonight—not like a home, but like a mausoleum built on lies.
He walked up the sweeping mahogany staircase, his footsteps heavy and hollow. Every shadow looked like Marissa; every whisper in the drafty hallways sounded like her cold, mocking laugh.
He pushed open the door to Noah’s bedroom. The boy was still hospitalized, resting under heavy observation while doctors flushed the venom from his system. But his room was untouched. Toys littered the floor; a half-finished Lego castle sat on the desk.
Daniel walked over to the closet, his hands trembling as he reached for the top shelf where Marissa kept her private lockbox. He didn't need a key anymore; Detective Vance had given him the master search warrant authorization hours ago. With a sharp tug, Daniel ripped the heavy wooden panel off the wall safe.
Inside wasn't money or jewelry. It was a thick stack of spiral-bound notebooks.
Daniel pulled the top book out, flipping open the cover. The pages were covered in frantic, obsessive handwriting, accompanied by newspaper clippings, medical charts, and printed photographs of his late wife, Clara, crossed out in thick red ink.
“Phase One: Eliminate the mother,” read an entry dated two years ago. “Make it look like natural heart failure. The digitalis extract works slowly, mimics natural arrest.”
Daniel felt the air leave his lungs. Clara hadn’t died of a weak heart. She had been murdered. Slowly. Systematically.
He flipped further, his eyes scanning the horrifying blueprint of Marissa’s mind.
“Phase Two: Infiltrate the husband. Appeal to his guilt. Isolate him from his business partners and remaining family until he is entirely dependent on my validation.”
“Phase Three: Break the boy. A child under continuous psychological torture will eventually lash out. When he hallucinates or screams, no one will believe him. When the accident happens, everyone will thank me for saving what's left of the family.”
Daniel dropped the notebook. It hit the floor with a dull thud, sliding open to the final, freshly written page.

The ink was barely dry. It listed a new name, underlined three times in jagged, furious strokes: Evelyn Hart.
Suddenly, every light in the mansion flickered violently and died, plunging the sprawling estate into absolute darkness.
