Chapter 2 - THE EVICTION NOTICE AND THE FIRST CRACK

Three days later, at precisely 9:00 a.m., two armed county deputies accompanied a court-certified process server to 427 Elmwood Terrace.

Daniel was out at a landscaping consultation, but Vanessa was home, sipping artisanal coffee in her silk robe. When the heavy pounding echoed through the house, she swung the door open with an annoyed expression, expecting a delivery driver.

Instead, she was handed a legal packet bearing the stamp of the Superior Court and Veritas Properties LLC.

Vanessa tore open the envelope. The top document read: NOTICE TO QUIT PREMISES – IMMEDIATE VACATION ORDER. Below it was a secondary notice: PROPERTY LISTING AND FORCED SALE NOTIFICATION.

Her phone immediately buzzed. It was Daniel.

“Babe, what is going on?” Daniel’s voice cracked through the speaker, panicked and breathless. “Some process server just called me saying our house is being seized! They’re putting a ‘For Sale’ sign in the front yard right now!”

“Your mother’s lawyer is downstairs with the police!” Vanessa shrieked, her voice losing its polished composure entirely. “She’s throwing us out! Call her right now! Tell her to stop this madness!”

Daniel dialed my cell phone frantically. It rang four times before going straight to voicemail. I had blocked his number.

Within twenty minutes, Daniel’s black pickup truck tore into the driveway, tires screaming against the asphalt. He threw open the door, storming up the steps with his face flushed crimson. He spotted Margaret’s associate standing by the gate, supervising a professional real estate team planting a massive FOR SALE BY OWNER – SHAW & ASSOCIATES sign right in the middle of the front lawn.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?!” Daniel roared, charging toward the agent. “This is our house! My mother gave us this house as a wedding gift!”

The agent didn’t even blink. He simply handed Daniel a laminated copy of the corporate deed showing Eleanor Vance as the sole owner.

“You have seventy-two hours to remove your personal belongings, Mr. Vance,” the agent said calmly. “The first open house is scheduled for Saturday at noon.”
