Chapter 4 - THE OPEN HOUSE SPECTACLE
Saturday morning arrived with crisp autumn sunshine. At 11:45 a.m., a line of luxury cars began parking along Elmwood Terrace. Word had gotten out—partly due to Vanessa’s viral posts, and partly due to Margaret’s aggressive marketing campaign labeling the property as a “Quick Liquidation Estate Sale with Motivated Seller.”
Curious onlookers, real estate investors, TikTok rubberneckers, and genuine buyers flooded the street.
Inside the house, Daniel and Vanessa were still frantically packing boxes into the back of their SUV. They had refused to leave voluntarily, attempting to stage a pathetic sit-in in the living room, surrounded by half-packed cardboard boxes.
At 12:00 sharp, the front door swung open. A prominent local real estate broker stepped inside, leading a group of wealthy prospective buyers.
“Welcome, everyone!” the broker announced cheerfully. “As you can see, the property features hardwood floors, vaulted ceilings, and a fully updated kitchen. The current occupants are in the process of vacating pursuant to a court order, but possession will be transferred clear and unencumbered within seven days!”
Daniel leaped up from the couch, his face purple with humiliation. “Get out! All of you get out! This is private property! You’re trespassing!”
A sharp-dressed investor chuckled, adjusting his sunglasses. “Buddy, the sign outside says list price is eight hundred thousand cash. I’ll offer eight-fifty right now, provided the bitter squatters are removed by Monday.”
Vanessa burst into hysterical tears, hurling a plastic packing peanuts container across the room. “You’re animals! All of you! My father is a lawyer! You’ll all be sued!”

The crowd laughed openly, taking photos and videos on their phones. Someone shouted from the hallway: “Hey Daniel, didn’t your mom buy that couch too? Better leave it for the new owners!”
Defeated, humiliated, and utterly broken, Daniel grabbed his sobbing wife by the arm and dragged her out the front door as the crowd applauded mockingly.
