While Daniel and Vanessa licked their wounds in a cheap roadside motel, the internet investigation machine had turned its attention toward Vanessa’s “supportive” parents—the very people Daniel had praised in his wedding post.
An anonymous investigative blogger, tipped off by one of Margaret’s researchers, dug into the background of Vanessa’s father, Richard Sterling.

Richard Sterling was not a successful, wealthy patriarch who “always supported” Daniel. In reality, Richard was a convicted financial fraudster who had served time in federal prison for bankruptcy fraud and shell-company embezzlement. Furthermore, Richard and his wife were drowning in over six hundred thousand dollars of combined tax liens, credit card debt, and pending civil lawsuits.
Worse still, bank records subpoenaed by Margaret’s legal team for a separate liability hearing revealed a sinister motive behind the secret wedding: Vanessa and Richard had targeted Daniel precisely because they knew he had a "wealthy mother" who owned prime real estate.
