Chapter 2 - The $50 Million Funeral Fraud

Clara’s world shattered into a thousand jagged pieces inside the sealed back seat of her armored SUV. Beside her, Lily sat frozen, clutching a mug of warm hot chocolate supplied by Clara’s terrified personal driver, Arthur.

Clara’s phone had been buzzing nonstop for twenty minutes. The caller ID flashed the name that had been her rock for the last ten years: Julian (Husband).

Every time the phone lit up, Clara felt a cold sweat coat her spine.

"Arthur," Clara said, her voice shaking violently as she stared at the little girl sitting next to her. "Drive us to Dr. Harrison’s private clinic. Now. Do not answer any calls from my husband or the estate."

"Ma'am?" Arthur asked, eyes wide in the rearview mirror. "Mr. Julian said you missed your board meeting—"

"DO AS I SAY!" Clara screamed, a raw, primal roar that terrified even herself.

An hour later, inside the sterile, hyper-secure rooms of Manhattan’s elite private laboratory, Dr. Harrison—a long-time family friend—looked at the DNA machine results with an expression of sheer horror. He held two sheets of paper in his hands, comparing them repeatedly.

"Clara..." Harrison’s voice was barely audible. "This child... Lily... shares 99.9% of your DNA. She is biologically your daughter."

Clara fell back into a leather armchair, pressing her hands over her face as dry, agonizing sobs tore from her chest. "How? I saw the body! I signed the death certificate! Julian showed me the tiny casket!"

"Did you perform an autopsy, Clara?" Dr. Harrison asked gently. "Did you ever do a private DNA test on the infant before she was cremated?"

"No! I was sedated! Julian handled everything... he said it was too painful for me to see..." Clara froze mid-sentence.

The pieces began to fall together like a macabre jigsaw puzzle. Eight years ago, Clara’s father—the founder of Vance Global Enterprises—had willed his entire $50 billion empire directly to Clara and her firstborn heir. If Clara had no living children, the trust stipulated that full corporate control would revert to her husband, Julian, upon her 35th birthday.

Clara’s 35th birthday was in three days.

"He stole my baby," Clara whispered, her eyes turning into obsidian ice. "He faked her death, paid off the hospital, hid her away in an orphanage or a fake family... just so he could claim full control of the trust when I turned thirty-five!"

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the clinic swung open.

Julian Vance stepped into the room. He was impeccably dressed in a bespoke Tom Ford suit, his hair perfectly styled, his handsome face wearing a look of deep, sorrowful concern. Behind him stood two muscular men in dark suits.

"Clara, darling! Thank God I found you," Julian said, stepping forward with outstretched arms. "Arthur told me you were hysterical on Fifth Avenue. Picking up a street urchin? Taking her to a private clinic? Sweetheart, you're having another mental breakdown. The grief over lost Eleanor is consuming you again."

Lily shrank behind Clara, digging her tiny fingers into Clara’s coat.

Clara stood up slowly, stepping between her husband and her daughter. "Get out, Julian."

Julian’s affectionate smile slowly melted away, replaced by a cold, calculating sneer. He glanced at the DNA report in Dr. Harrison’s hand, then at Lily.

"You always were too sentimental, Clara," Julian said softly, signing a paper handed to him by one of his guards. "Dr. Harrison, I’m afraid my wife is suffering from severe psychiatric distress. I’ve just signed her emergency involuntary psychiatric hold papers. The guards will take her to our estate upstate for... recovery."

"You can't do this!" Dr. Harrison yelled.

"I can," Julian replied smoothly, pulling a silenced handgun from his inner jacket pocket and pointing it directly at the doctor. "Because as of today, I hold full power of attorney. And this little street rat... is about to have a very unfortunate accident."
