Chapter 5 - The Glass Tower Trap

CRASH!

Before Julian could pull the trigger, the glass skylight high above the ballroom shattered into thousands of shimmering shards.

Marcus rappelled down from the ceiling on a tactical cable, slamming violently into Julian and sending the gun skittering across the marble floor. The crowd screamed and scattered in terror, stampeding toward the exit doors.

Julian hit the floor hard, but he rolled, drawing a hidden tactical knife from his boot. With a wild slash, he cut Marcus across the chest, sending the scarred security veteran crashing against a marble pillar.

Julian scrambled to his feet, eyes darting frantically. Realizing he was trapped, he grabbed Lily, who was trying to run to Marcus, and dragged the screaming child toward the private elevator behind the stage.

"LILY!" Clara screamed.

Julian slammed his security pass against the elevator scanner. The doors shut just as Clara reached them. The floor indicator lit up: PENTHOUSE / ROOFTOP HELIPAD.

"Marcus!" Clara cried out, running to the wounded man.

"Go... take the emergency stairs..." Marcus gasped, clutching his bleeding chest. "He has an escape helicopter waiting on the roof... don't let him take her!"

Clara didn't wait. Fueled by eight years of stolen motherhood and pure adrenaline, she kicked off her high heels, grabbed a heavy brass candlestick from a fallen table, and threw open the door to the emergency stairwell.

She ran up thirty flights of stairs in pitch darkness, her feet bleeding, her lungs burning like fire. Every step was a battle against her own exhaustion, but the image of her baby girl in the hands of a monster kept her moving.

She burst through the heavy roof door just as the thunderous roar of helicopter blades whipped the freezing rain into a frenzy.

On the rain-slicked helipad, Julian was dragging Lily toward the open door of a sleek black helicopter. The pilot was revving the engines, ready for immediate takeoff.

"JULIAN!" Clara screamed above the roar of the rotors.

Julian turned around, his hair wild, his expensive suit soaked with rain. He held Lily in front of him like a human shield, resting the edge of his combat knife near her throat.

"Stay back, Clara!" Julian yelled, his voice barely audible over the storm and the helicopter noise. "Step any closer and I’ll end her right here! I’m taking the girl. You can keep your useless billions, but I’ll make sure you spend the rest of your life knowing your daughter is suffering somewhere in the world where you can never find her!"

Clara stopped. The cold wind whipped her wet red dress around her legs. She lowered the brass candlestick, her hands shaking.

"Please, Julian," Clara begged, falling to her knees in the pouring rain, tears mixing with the water on her face. "Take the money. Take the empire. I’ll sign everything over to you right now. Just give me my baby back."

Julian let out a cruel, maniacal laugh. "It was never just about the money, Clara. It was about breaking you."

He turned to step onto the helicopter skid.

At that exact second, Lily looked up at Clara. The seven-year-old girl didn't cry. Instead, she remembered the survival tactics she had learned on the brutal streets of New York.

With all the strength in her small body, Lily stomped her heavy street shoe directly down onto Julian’s bare arch, and drove her elbow backward into his groin.

Julian gasped in pain, his grip slipping for a fraction of a second.

It was the only window Clara needed.
