Chapter 6 - The Plot Twist in the Ashes

Clara launched herself forward like a tigress.
She tackled Julian at full speed, knocking Lily safely out of his grip onto the rain-slicked floor of the helipad. Clara and Julian slammed hard against the slippery edge of the roof’s perimeter wall.
The knife flew from Julian’s hand, spinning off the side of the 60-story building into the abyss below.
Julian snarled, wrapping his heavy hands around Clara’s throat, pinning her against the low concrete wall. Clara gagged, her vision spotting black as his grip tightened.
"You should have stayed dead eight years ago, Clara!" Julian screamed into her face.
Clara, her oxygen fading fast, reached blindly into her dress pocket. Her fingers wrapped around the heavy, sharp gold pen she had taken from her purse earlier that night.
With her final burst of strength, Clara jammed the steel tip of the heavy pen directly into the side of Julian’s neck.
Julian let out a gurgling gasp, releasing her throat as he stumbled backward, clutching his neck in shock. He took one unsteady step backward—forgetting how close he was to the edge.
His heel slipped on the wet concrete.
For a terrifying second, Julian suspended in the air, his eyes wide with sudden, absolute terror. He reached out a desperate hand toward Clara. "Clara, save me!"
Clara stood above him, rain dripping from her chin, her eyes cold and empty of all mercy.
She did not reach out.
Julian fell. His scream was swallowed by the roaring storm as his body vanished into the dark void below the 60th floor.
Silence descended on the rooftop, broken only by the quiet idling of the helicopter, whose pilot promptly cut the engines and raised his hands in surrender.
Clara collapsed onto her knees, gasping for air. Seconds later, small, warm arms wrapped tightly around her neck.
"Mommy..." Lily sobbed, pressing her wet face into Clara’s shoulder.
Clara pulled her daughter into her arms, weeping openly, holding the child so tightly it felt as if they would merge into one soul. "I have you. I have you baby... I'll never let you go again."
THREE MONTHS LATERThe sun shone brightly over a lush, green estate in Upstate New York. Lily was playing on a swing set in the garden, her laughter echoing across the lawn.
Inside the mansion’s study, Clara sat at her desk, going through her late father’s personal files to finalize the restructure of Vance Global into a foundation dedicated to rescuing trafficked and missing children.
Marcus, his neck wrapped in medical bandages but recovering well, walked into the room carrying a sealed black envelope.
"This came from the Swiss bank holding your father’s private safety deposit box," Marcus said quietly, placing it on her desk. "It was set to be delivered to you only after Julian’s death."
Clara frowned. She broke the wax seal and pulled out a handwritten letter from her father, dated two weeks before his death—along with a second sealed DNA document.
She read her father’s elegant handwriting:
"My dearest Clara,
If you are reading this, it means I am dead, and Julian’s true nature has been exposed. I discovered his plot to steal your baby weeks ago. But there is a truth you must know—a truth I took to my grave to protect you.
Lily is indeed your biological daughter. But Julian... was never her father.
Eight years ago, when Julian found out you were pregnant with another man’s child—the man you loved before your arranged marriage to him—he planned to eliminate the child out of sheer spite. I swapped the medical records to make Julian believe the baby was his so he wouldn't kill her immediately.
Lily’s real biological father isn't dead, Clara. He didn't abandon you. Julian framed him and had him imprisoned in a private overseas facility under a false name.
His name is Gabriel. And he is still alive."
Clara’s hands began to shake uncontrollably. The letter slipped from her fingers.
She looked out the window at Lily, who was smiling at the bright sky—the daughter who possessed the very same rare, striking blue eyes as Gabriel... the only man Clara had ever truly loved.

Clara slowly looked up at Marcus, her tears falling fast, but a powerful, relentless smile breaking across her face.
"Marcus," Clara whispered, her voice filled with a brand-new, unstoppable purpose. "Get the jet ready. We’re going to get my husband."
