Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Safe House

BANG!

The heavy glass window of the clinic snapped as a high-caliber sniper round tore through the frame, missing Julian’s head by inches and shattering the plaster wall behind him.

"GET DOWN!" Clara screamed, tackling Lily to the floor as chaotic gunfire erupted.

The dark-suited guards pulled their weapons, but a smoke grenade slammed through the broken window, instantly filling the clinic with suffocating gray smog. Out of the smoke, a figure tackled Julian’s main guard to the floor with brutal, military efficiency.

It was the man in the trench coat from the alleyway.

"Clara! Take the girl and run through the fire exit! NOW!" the man barked, his voice coarse and metallic through a tactical mask.

Clara didn't hesitate. Grabbing Lily in her arms, she sprinted through the haze, burst through the heavy crash-doors of the rear exit, and tumbled into a narrow Manhattan alley. A battered black SUV was idling with its doors open.

"Get in if you want to live!" the masked man yelled, diving into the driver’s seat a second later as bullets chipped the brick walls around them.

The SUV roared out of the alley, burning rubber as it sped into the chaotic evening traffic of New York City. Clara sat in the back, holding a trembling Lily tightly against her chest, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

"Who are you?" Clara demanded, reaching into her purse and pulling out a heavy gold pen, holding it like a weapon. "Did Julian hire you? Are you taking us to be killed?"

The driver pulled off his mask as he navigated a sharp turn onto the West Side Highway.

Clara gasped. The driver’s face was horribly scarred on the left side—severe third-degree burns stretching from his cheek down to his neck. But those eyes... she recognized those icy green eyes anywhere.

"Marcus?" Clara breathed, her voice cracking. "Marcus... my father's former head of security? You... you died in the yacht explosion five years ago!"

"Julian tried to kill me in that explosion, Clara," Marcus said darkly, looking at her through the rear-view mirror. "Because I found out what he did at St. Jude’s Hospital seven years ago. I found out he paid the chief of pediatrics $2 million to declare your baby dead, while he handed the infant over to a low-level smuggler."

"Why didn't you come to me?!" Clara cried.

"Because you were surrounded by his snakes! Every assistant, every bodyguard, every doctor you trusted was on Julian’s payroll," Marcus revealed. "If I had told you back then, Julian would have killed you instantly and made it look like a suicide. I had to go underground. I spent seven years tracking Lily through three different illegal adoption networks."

"Then why now?" Clara asked, looking down at Lily, who was fast asleep from pure exhaustion, her little head resting on Clara’s lap.

"Because Julian’s master plan isn't just to steal the estate on your birthday," Marcus said, his voice dropping to a deadly chill. "He doesn't just want the money, Clara. He’s planning to frame you for the murder of your father... and then eliminate both you and Lily in a staged car accident before midnight on your birthday."

Clara’s blood ran cold. "My father died of a heart attack!"

"No," Marcus said, pulling the SUV into an underground parking garage beneath an abandoned warehouse in Brooklyn. "Julian poisoned him. And I have the video evidence to prove it."
