Chapter 18 - THE NEW HORIZONFive years later.

The morning sun over Cape Cod was brilliant, casting golden rays across the Atlantic.

I sat on the sun deck with Ellen, drinking our morning coffee in peaceful silence. The garden below was in full bloom, filled with vibrant hydrangeas and roses planted in memory of resilience and survival.

"Arthur called this morning," I said softly, setting my coffee cup down on the wooden table.

Ellen looked over at me, her eyes calm and serene. "Is it about Michael?"

"His sentence is officially completed today," I replied. "He was released from federal custody at 6:00 AM."

Ellen didn't flinch. She didn't cry. She took a slow sip of her tea, looking out at the endless horizon where the sky met the deep blue ocean.

"Did he ask to see us?" she asked quietly.

"His attorney reached out," I said. "He wanted to know if he could come home."

Ellen turned her head, looking into my eyes with absolute clarity and strength. "What did you tell his attorney, Robert?"

"I told him what you and I agreed upon years ago," I said, taking her hand in mine. "We gave him our love, our guidance, and our entire world. He chose to destroy it. Our home is here, together. But Michael’s chapter in our lives was closed the night he let them strike you in that corridor."

Ellen smiled, a warm, genuine smile that reached her eyes, reflecting a peace that could never be shaken again.

"Good," she whispered, leaning her head against my shoulder. "Let him find his own path."
