Chapter 3 - The SummonsThe Judiciary Committee hearing room was packed to suffocation. Journalists, lobbyists, and curious citizens spilled out into the marble hallways, all buzzing with anticipation. Today was supposed to be a routine confirmation hearing for a federal judgeship, but Washington's underground rumor mill was violently churning. Word had leaked that a high-ranking official was about to face a catastrophic ethics subpoena.

At the center dais sat Senator Eleanor Vance. Her makeup was flawless, her suit a commanding navy blue, and her posture an absolute monument to unshakeable power. She had spent the last forty-eight hours executing damage control with ruthless efficiency: two federal judges had been subtly threatened, Marcus Thorne’s editor had received a terrifying midnight audit warning from the IRS, and Dr. Evelyn Reed’s digital footprint had been scrubbed from every database in the country.

Or so Eleanor thought.

As she picked up her gavel to call the session to order, the heavy oak doors at the back of the chamber swung open with a resounding thud.

Silence slammed over the room like a physical blow.

Walking down the center aisle wasn't a disgraced bureaucrat or a low-level aide. It was Marcus Thorne, flanked not by lawyers, but by two heavily armed U.S. Marshals in full tactical gear, accompanied by a woman wearing a federal witness-protection windbreaker: Dr. Evelyn Reed.

Eleanor’s hand froze mid-air above the gavel. Her breathing hitched, but years of political theater kept her facial muscles locked in a stern, professional frown.

"Point of order, Madam Chair," Marcus’s voice rang out, clear and uncompromising, cutting through the stunned whispers of the gallery. "Before this committee proceeds with any confirmations, we have an emergency motion to introduce under the federal whistle-blower protection act."

"Mr. Thorne," Eleanor’s voice was ice, devoid of any warmth, though a bead of sweat traced a microscopic path down her powdered neck. "This is a closed legislative proceeding. You are out of order. Security, remove these individuals immediately."

"You can't clear the room, Senator," Evelyn Reed stepped forward, lifting her head high, her eyes locking onto Eleanor’s terrified gaze. "Not when the evidence of your midnight operations in Fairfax County is already broadcasting live to every major news network in the country."

On the massive overhead projector screens behind the committee dais—screens usually reserved for policy charts and demographic graphs—the encrypted files of Project Janus suddenly flashed to life, displaying unredacted financial transfers, audio confessions, and the undeniable photograph of Eleanor Vance with a bloody scalpel in her hand.
