Chapter 9 - The Ultimate Betrayal"Your Honor," Julian Croft’s voice echoed across the courtroom with terrifying calm as he walked directly toward the prosecution's table, ignoring the startled shouts of the bailiffs. "The defense wishes to move for an immediate closed-session national security override pursuant to Section 8 of the Patriot Act."

The judge slammed his gavel down furiously. "Mr. Croft! You have no standing in this court! Who authorized your entry?"

Julian calmly reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a crisp, gold-embossed document bearing the direct signature of the sitting President of the United States.

"The executive branch, Your Honor," Julian replied smoothly. "Project Janus was never an illegal rogue operation. It was a black-budget national security asset authorized under executive directive during the previous administration. Senator Vance was not acting out of personal greed; she was acting as an instrument of statecraft."

In the gallery, Marcus Thorne leaped to his feet. "It's a cover-up! They're burying the entire conspiracy to protect the White House!"

Before Marcus could take another step, two men in dark suits grabbed him by the arms, dragging him back into his seat with brutal efficiency.

Eleanor Vance stood frozen at the defense table. She looked at Julian, her eyes wide with sudden horror. She had confessed, believing she could bring down the system that created her, only to realize that the machine was far larger, darker, and more powerful than she had ever imagined.

Julian turned his head slightly, locking eyes with Eleanor. He didn't smile. He simply whispered across the courtroom: "Power doesn't protect its servants, Eleanor. It consumes them."
