Chapter 10 - Ashes of the EmpireThree weeks later, the headlines vanished from the front pages almost as quickly as they had appeared.

The Department of Justice quietly issued a sweeping statement announcing that all federal charges against Eleanor Vance had been dismissed "due to classified national security protocols and executive privilege." The Project Janus files were re-sealed for a mandatory fifty-year classification period. Dr. Evelyn Reed disappeared once more, swallowed back into the protective custody of an undisclosed federal relocation program.
And Eleanor Vance?
She was released from federal custody under the cover of a moonless night, driven straight to a secluded private airstrip outside Maryland. As she stepped out of the black SUV onto the tarmac, a sleek private jet idled with its turbine engines whining.
Waiting at the bottom of the aircraft steps wasn't Julian Croft, nor any representative of the government.
Just a single man holding a small, unmarked manila envelope.
Eleanor approached slowly, the cold wind whipping her hair across her face, exposing the jagged scar on her cheek under the harsh orange glow of the airstrip lights.
"Where am I going?" Eleanor asked, her voice cracking, stripped of all the arrogance and power she had wielded for decades.
The man didn't speak. He simply handed her the envelope and turned away, boarding a secondary vehicle that sped off into the darkness.
Eleanor tore open the envelope with trembling fingers. Inside was a single plane ticket to a remote, nameless village in South America, a prepaid debit card with a modest living allowance, and a small, razor-sharp silver scalpel identical to the one she had used years ago in the Virginia facility.
Beneath the items was a handwritten note:

"You wanted to rule the empire, Eleanor. But empires are built on blood, and they always demand payment in full. You are free. But you are entirely alone."
Eleanor looked up at the vast, indifferent night sky, then down at the scalpel in her hand. She tossed the blade into the dark grass, climbed the stairs into the empty cabin of the jet, and closed the hatch behind her, forever trapped in the shadow of the empire she thought she had conquered.
