Chapter 4 - The Collapse of the AegisThe chaos in the hearing room erupted instantly. Camera shutters fired like machine guns, anchors shouted frantically into their cell phones, and Republican and Democratic senators alike leaped from their seats, shouting over one another in sheer disbelief.

Eleanor Vance did not scream. She did not weep. Instead, she stood up slowly, her chair scraping harshly against the marble floor. Her eyes burned with a cold, terrifying fury as she looked down at Evelyn and Marcus.
"This is a coordinated cyberattack," Eleanor declared, her voice booming through the auditorium's amplification system, weaponizing the full force of her rhetorical training. "A desperate fabrication by disgruntled operatives attempting to derail the democratic process! I demand an immediate investigation into treasonous foreign interference!"
"It's not foreign interference, Eleanor. It's us," a deep, gravelly voice echoed from the gallery doors.
The crowd parted. Stepping into the light was General Arthur Sterling, retired Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff—a man universally revered as a living American military legend. His presence alone commanded instant, breathless reverence.
Eleanor’s ironclad composure finally shattered completely. The blood drained entirely from her face, leaving her looking parchment-white against her navy suit. Her hand flew unconsciously to her left cheek, pressing desperately against the invisible scar beneath her makeup.
"Arthur..." Eleanor whispered, the name escaping her lips like a dying breath. "You wouldn't."
"You forgot one crucial rule, Eleanor," General Sterling said as he walked steadily toward the witness table, placing a heavy, worn leather briefcase onto the mahogany wood. "Power isn't measured by how many people bow to you in the light. It's measured by what you're willing to protect when the dark catches up."
Sterling popped the brass latches of the briefcase. Inside lay a pristine, heavily sealed military tribunal dossier labeled: CLASSIFIED - E. VANCE / OPERATION BLACKSHIELD.

"Twenty years ago," Sterling addressed the stunned committee members, "before she was a senator, Eleanor Vance was an operative in deep-cover foreign acquisition. She didn't build her fortune through corporate lobbying. She built it by selling classified satellite relay codes to foreign actors—and she earned that scar on her face when her own co-conspirator turned on her during a botched exchange."
The room fell into a tomb-like stillness. Every camera, every eye, and every microphone was now trained exclusively on Eleanor Vance.
