Chapter 2 - The Whispers in the ArchivesMidnight in Washington D.C. rarely brings silence; instead, it hums with the electric anxiety of secrets waiting to be leaked. Marcus Thorne sat in the subterranean archives of the Washington Chronicle, surrounded by towering stacks of microfilms and unredacted federal depositions. His laptop screen cast a harsh blue glow across his exhausted face.

On the screen was the centerpiece of his investigation: Project Janus.
According to the encrypted files, Project Janus was an illegal off-the-books intelligence network funded by dark-money political action committees tied to Eleanor Vance. Its sole purpose? To systematically silence whistleblowers, ruin political rivals, and bury federal investigations into corporate corruption linked to Eleanor's major donors.
Suddenly, the heavy metal door of the archive room clicked open. Marcus spun around, his hand instinctively dropping to the heavy brass paperweight on his desk.
Stepping out of the shadows was a woman wearing a dark trench coat, her hood pulled low over her forehead. Water dripped from her umbrella onto the concrete floor. As she lowered her hood, Marcus gasped. It was Dr. Evelyn Reed, former chief medical officer at the Virginia detention facility—a woman who had been officially declared dead in a fiery car crash two years prior.
"You're looking in the wrong places, Mr. Thorne," Evelyn said, her voice shaking as she checked the hallway behind her. "The ledgers don't matter. The money can always be laundered. If you want to bring down Eleanor Vance, you need to understand what she is willing to sacrifice to keep that scar a secret."
"Why come to me now?" Marcus asked, sliding his recorder across the desk and hitting record. "Everyone thinks you're dead. The federal government closed your case."
Evelyn unbuttoned her coat, revealing a heavily bandaged right shoulder and a clinical dossier stamped with red classified markers. She pulled out a single, high-resolution photograph and slammed it onto the desk.

It was a picture of Eleanor Vance standing over a blood-stained operating table, holding a scalpel, with a younger Evelyn pinned beneath her. Across Eleanor's cheek was a fresh, bleeding gash—the exact origin of the scar.
"She didn't just manage the corruption, Mr. Thorne," Evelyn whispered, leaning in close so her breath hitched against the microphone. "She engineered it with her own hands. And if we don't file the injunction by dawn, she's going to eliminate every single witness on her list—starting with me."
