Chapter 6 - Handcuffs and HeritageThe arrest of Senator Eleanor Vance was broadcast live across national television. Tactical units from the FBI and federal marshals swarmed the estate, their tactical boots echoing through the opulent hallways that had once hosted presidents, foreign dignitaries, and billionaire kingmakers.

As two federal agents pulled her arms behind her back to secure the steel handcuffs, Eleanor refused to bow her head. Her hair was slightly disheveled, her expensive designer suit wrinkled from the struggle, but her eyes blazed with a manic, defiant fire.
As they marched her down the grand marble steps toward the armored federal van, hundreds of protesters and journalists crowded behind the police barricades, chanting slogans of outrage. Flashbulbs strobed continuously, capturing every angle of her downfall.
And then, a reporter from the front row shouted a question that pierced through the noise: "Senator Vance! Do you have anything to say to the families of the whistleblowers you destroyed?"
Eleanor stopped dead in her tracks. She turned her head toward the camera lens, a bitter, cynical smile twisting her lips.
"You think this is justice?" Eleanor’s voice echoed sharply across the plaza, captured by a dozen boom mics. "You think locking me away cleanses this city? I built the very systems that kept you all safe in your beds! Without me, this entire corrupt empire will tear itself apart from the inside out!"
A federal agent gently shoved her forward into the secure vehicle, slamming the heavy steel door shut, cutting off her voice.

Inside the back of the van, sitting alone in the dim amber light, Eleanor finally let her facade crumble. She slumped against the metal wall, her breath coming in ragged, broken gasps. Her left hand rose slowly to trace the jagged scar on her face. The makeup had completely worn away, exposing the raw, silvery tissue beneath.
She had conquered Washington, defeated rivals, and buried bodies. But she could not outrun the past.
