Chapter 5 - The Spider’s Web UnravelsWithin hours of the Senate showdown, the political machine that had protected Eleanor Vance for decades imploded with catastrophic velocity. Social media hashtags like #TheScarTruth and #VanceEmpireCollapse trended globally, accumulating over fifty million posts in less than six hours. Mainstream media networks dropped all scheduled programming to broadcast live analyses of the Project Janus files.

Locked inside her sprawling Capitol Hill townhouse, Eleanor paced across the Persian rugs like a caged panther. Her phone buzzed relentlessly on the marble coffee table—text messages from campaign donors pulling their funds, legal counsel resigning en masse, and federal prosecutors officially issuing a warrant for her arrest.
Her empire was burning to ash, and she had only herself to blame.
"Senator Vance?" a sharp voice called out from the doorway of the study.
It was Julian Croft, her chief of staff and shadow strategist for over fifteen years. Unlike Eleanor, Julian looked entirely calm, casually adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses as he locked the front door behind him.
"Julian, thank God," Eleanor rushed toward him, her hands trembling as she grabbed his lapels. "We need to activate the off-shore accounts in the Caymans. We need to charter a private jet to Zurich tonight. If we get ahead of the Department of Justice jurisdiction—"
"There is no 'we', Eleanor," Julian interrupted softly, gently removing her hands from his jacket.
Eleanor froze. "What did you say?"
"I said there is no 'we'," Julian repeated, stepping back and pulling a small digital recorder from his pocket. He pressed play.
The audio filled the quiet study: Eleanor’s own voice, cold and calculating, ordering Julian to silence Dr. Evelyn Reed permanently if she ever attempted to contact the press.

"I handed this over to the FBI forty-five minutes ago," Julian said smoothly, a faint, chilling smile playing on his lips. "Loyalty in Washington is a transactional currency, Eleanor. And your account hit a permanent zero the moment General Sterling walked into that hearing room."
Before Eleanor could lunge at him, the heavy oak front door of the townhouse splintered inward with a deafening crash.
